Walking the PCT in Oregon is never so easy.

If you want to walk the Pacific Crest Trail from California to Washington and enjoy the scenic beauties of Oregon, this is your book. Even if you only want to walk short sections at a time, the elevation maps and apt descriptions of sections of the actual trail will make your efforts easier. Keep in mind that the topography covered ranges from open ponderosa pine forests through volcanic scab land to North American rain forest with mosquito infested mountain lakes and glaciers as some hazards, typical terrain for the entire Pacific Crest Trail.

I've been a fan of the idea of hiking the PCT for years. But I've never really got around to it. This guide gives you excellent chances for just day or overnight trips. Very clear directions to trail heads. Very helpful.

Susan E. Jackson is Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at New York University. Questioning the myth of unconditional love between parents and children, this study examines the strength of the parental bond when children are born with physical defects. The author, a social scientist, studied parents' behavior toward 1,450 children born with defects in three hospitals in Israel, and then conducted follow-up studies over a period of six years with 200 families in their homes. One of the major recurring patterns of parental behavior was a massive tendency toward rejection of deformed children. Rejection was manifested by parents' wishes for drastic separation from their children through abandonment, institutionalization, or giving up for adoption. If brought home, the children were isolated and hidden from view. Weiss found that half of the newborns with physically observable defects were abandoned by their parents in the hospital. Even when the parents were assured by doctors that their children would develop intellectually or would not require special care, the tendency to abandon remained strong. Normal children who suffered physical deformity due to burns or other accidents were similarly rejected by their parents. This study will take a major place in the literature on human behavior because through exhaustive and long-term observation of actual behavior in thousands of individual situations, it exposes the extreme importance of physical appearance in interpersonal relations.

The author describes how the deformity causes confusion in the parents' cognitive system, labelling the child with a name such as monster or devil or creature, or another non-human category. Parents' reactions to their children's body image are discussed and the concept of body boundaries is analyzed. Children connected to medical apparatus or sickly children are the cause of much parental rejection. Also, territorial restrictions are placed on the deformed child in the home. These range from closeting or imprisoning in unfurnished surroundings separate from the family to demotion to servant status within the family. This study refutes most assumptions in the literature and shows that forming bonds with one's biological child is not necessarily spontaneous, automatic, or natural, and that every child undergoes a process of adoption or rejection based on external appearance and whether or not that appearance matches the parents' image of a person. Hospital personnel, social workers, sociologists and anthropologists will be profoundly influenced by this work, as will be all others who read it.

About the Author

Carl E. Long has trained in the arts of karate, Japanese shito-ryu, Okinawan kobudo, shindo muso ryu jojutsu, and iaido—the art of samurai swordsmanship. As the vice chairman and director for the Jikishin-Kai International, he is responsible for the training and certification of the instructors and schools throughout the United States, Canada, Central America, South America, and Europe. He lives in Kingston, Pennsylvania. Masayuki Shimabukuro has trained in the arts of judo, karate, Okinawan kobudo, Japanese shito-ryu, and iaido. He is the international director for the Nippon Kobudo Jikishin-kai martial arts organization and represents authentic Eishin-Ryu samurai swordsmanship worldwide. He holds the title of hanshi—the highest recognition in traditional Japanese martial arts—and has been named Black Belt magazine’s Weapons Instructor of the Year. He is the author of Flashing Steel and Living Karate. He lives in San Diego.

Samurai Swordsmanship

An old adage goes you can't judge a book by its cover. However, you can always tell something about an author by its content. There can be no doubt that Samurai Swordsmanship by Masayuki Shimabukuro and Carl E. Long stands in a class of its own. For those fortunate enough to study with Long Kyoshi, his wisdom and superior technical competence shine through these pages in a clear reflection of teaching he, in turn, received from Masayuki Shimabukuro Hanshi, the 21st soshihan of the Masaoka line of Eishin-ryu.

Complimenting the Black Belt DVD series entitled, "Samurai Swordsmanship," this volume extends the discussion of Eishin-ryu Battojutsu, which began with the seminal work Flashing Steel by Shimabukuro Hanshi and Leonard J. Pellman, into the realms of Batto, Kenjutsu, and Tameshigiri. But it does more than that. The strengths of this well-organized book, and what sets it apart from many similar works on the same topic, are its holistic and philosophical approach along with an absolute insistence on Kihon (fundamentals) for training in swordsmanship.

An indication of how seriously the authors take the concept of Kihon is evidenced by the fact that they concentrate upon fundamentals for nearly one-half of the book. Students of Battojutsu will find especially helpful the photographs of both correct and incorrect technique. As beginners, the latter are common to all of us and, as is usually the case, we learn best from our mistakes. The second half of the book starts with the offensive and defensive application of these fundamental principles focusing upon target areas, as well as their necessary defensive response in a variety of blocks. The practical use of both offensive and defensive technique is then further developed in a presentation of Batto-Ho and Kumitachi (paired fencing) drills. The description and illustration of the Batto-Ho Waza is a welcome new addition to the literature on the Eishin-ryu system, thus completing the curriculum established in Flashing Steel.

As the authors comment, "Tameshigiri or suemonogiri are a popular and enjoyable component of the practice of traditional Japanese sword arts" and certainly no study is complete without covering the topic of cutting. Aside from being exhilarating, the authors also point out the spiritual nature of this practice, focusing a sense of presence, awareness, and reverence. Correct cutting technique, relying upon an alignment of both mind and body, would not be possible without a thorough understanding of the fundamentals. And thus, like an Enso, the book comes full circle.

Long Kyoshi once commented to me, "It is not possible to learn Iaido from a book." I certainly agree with his wisdom, but respectfully counter that this book comes close to doing just that. One closing word of advice to the reader, do not just look at the pictures, read the text, it is clear, concise, and a real treasure.

A great tribute

I am just getting started in this book and had to take a breather. The authors have performed a great service to their Art and kenjutsu. I have only met Long sensei once but his technical skill and artistry are beyond question. The philosophy section is not only well written but it is necessary for the beginning, and even some more senior, students to absorb and apply in their practice. The photographoc images and technical descriptions are excellent. I am very pleased with this book and think it is a great tribute to their dedication and the ancestors of the Eishin Ryu system. Good Content but Flimsy Book - Misrepresented in the Preview

I haven't had time to go through all the content of this book as I just received it. The authors' pedigrees speak for themselves so I imagine all of the content to be just as great as the chapters I've read. My problem isn't so much with the content as is is with the way that content is represented here on Amazon. The LOOK INSIDE preview shows all-color photos, yet the book only has black and white pics. What's the big deal, you ask? The big deal is that the form factor for this dictates that full color spreads be printed on much better paper than what was used. These pages would barely qualify as magazine pages. The paper is of very poor quality and that's a huge issue for a book that I plan to spend a lot of time with. This book would never hold up to day to day use. It's a real shame the publisher didn't see fit to create a product whose physical qualities live up to the quality of the contents.
