A Facinating History

Though Blue Trout and Black Truffles is billed as Culinary journey, and it is at that, it is also something completely unexpected, an introduction to European life in the 1920s through 1940s. The exploration of food and wine is coupled with vibrant characters and unforgettable settings.

Classic enjoyable gastronomic essays and interviews

Wechsberg's book is an established classic on a par with those of A. J. Liebling and Waverly Root. Like those other authors, Wechsberg was a journalist who wrote about food, restaurants, and food cultures in the mid-20th century, and his insights and great storytelling give the writing a permanent appeal. This can be seen from the reaction after this essay collection (whose chapters were originally written as magazine articles) appeared in this reprint edition in the mid-1980s. I was at a Christmas party with some accomplished food folks, including Paul Bertolli of the Chez Panisse in Berkeley, and was recounting to someone one of the stories ("Tafelspitz for the Hofrat") from this book. When I finished I found that most of the room was listening, and that many of them, independently, had recently read the book too. That particular essay, by the way, has lately been re-discovered in Vienna, where it was set, and has been proudly adopted by some restaurants there. In this book Wechsberg interviewed, and popularized to US readers, the legendary Fernand Point, chef and owner of the 20th-century's most famous and influential restaurant in France (and for whom the _Guide Michelin_ reportedly debated adding a fourth star to their rating system for premium restaruants). Some of the chapters are interviews, some experiences and some celebrations of food. This book is well known and indispensable to food fanatics and those seeking more of the background and context from which contemporary western culinary culture -- high cuisine as well as comfort food -- emerged.

The Only Book of its Kind

I had a very difficult childbirth (back labor, young inexperienced doctor AND nurse, long, LONG labor, botched epidural led to general anesthesia for my emergency c-section, etc.).
For months I looked and looked to find something that would address my lingering feelings of loss and trauma. This book is the only one that addresses post traumatic stress after an especially difficult childbirth.
I guess the biggest thing it did for me is showed me I wasn't alone, and I wasn't crazy!
I can't say it "cured" me, but definitely worth the read if you're struggling with your birth experience.

Excellent!

I thought this was a great book for those of us with negative feelings of our birth experiences. Some real truths are dealt with here and I felt better reading about situations and emotions like my own. The book helped me realize that what I was feeling and people's reactions to my feelings were not at all uncommon. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is trying to recover from a negative experience and feels that no one understands. I am so glad I found it!

Wonderful, sensitive, kind treatment of birth trauma

This book represents one-of-a-kind treatment of the emotional havoc that a traumatic birth can have on a mother, and in turn her partner and baby. It is particularly effective in utilizing the birth stories of three women (including the author herself), which come from a spectrum of birth-traumatic experiences: the unnecessary cesearean, the absolutely necessary cesearean, and the highly manipulated vaginal birth. Through the accounts of these three women, a pathway is shown for many to follow in coming to terms with their own birth trauma. Perhaps the most commendable aspect of Madsen's treatment of the subject is that she choses to acknowledge birth trauma and the possible depression that follows as something other than "just hormonal," and even makes a good case for birth trauma being a particular instance of post-traumatic stress syndrome.
Besides the much-appreciated acknowledgment (to this reader, at any rate) that birth trauma is not merely unjustified self-pity, Madsen provides very concrete ways of coming to terms with what has happened and pushing on with life. Each chapter has "journal topics" for women to think, write or talk about. She also includes an entire chapter, "Creative Tools for Recovery," which details several more pathways, including art, writing, storytelling, dreams, bodywork, among others.
Not only is this book a must-read for any woman who has had a less than ideal birth, it would be highly recommended to people who have contact with new moms, including partners (who may have their own birth stress as well), doctors, nurses, midwives, doulas, counselors, and so forth.

Great Recipes and Gift Idea

This is one of my favorite cookbooks. In addition to truly delicious and different recipes, it includes historical notes about the Pike Place Market - which is one of the oldest fish and farmer markets in the U.S. - interesting facts about finny creatures. bivalves, and crustaceans (did you know that the plastic-like quill inside a squid is the vestige of its primeval molluscan shell?) , and the many people and cultures that make up and sell at the Market. The recipes are a bouillabaisse of cultures too: Thai, Cajun, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Native American, Sephardic, Mediterranean, Mexican - and you will find a number of accompaniments, which perfectly complement the entrees. A great gift (my wife has shared many copies), and a delightful read even if you don't feel like cooking. My only criticism - I wish her husband/architect, Mr. Johnson, had been commissioned for the cover illustration. His drawings that are interspersed with the text add interest and depth to Braiden's fine writing. Also, this book does not replicate her other fine works.

About the Author

AnnMaria De Mars is one of the most decorated U.S. judokas in the history of the sport. At her West Coast Judo Training Center she coaches athletes in judo, mixed martial arts and grappling. James Pedro Sr. has represented the United States as an international judo competitor in Europe and South America. He is the founder of Pedro s Judo Center where he coaches athletes in wrestling and mixed martial arts. They both live in Santa Monica, California.

Straightforward Reality Check for the Ground Game

This book was NOT what I expected - and I'm glad.

Originally, I got the book simply because I wanted to see what I was missing in my own ground game. I am not a competitor but I do have a vested interest in combatives as a martial artist and I have students who are in fact competitors. Wanting to see if there were any "nuggets of wisdom" I could pass on to them from the book, I got the Kindle edition and was very pleasantly surprised in the no-nonsense explanations, demonstrations and "reality checks" the book offered. More to the point, I enjoyed the way the book explained how to exploit the mistakes of others vs. spending so much time on critiquing the reader/judoka, etc.

One specific point I want to make: if you're getting this book simply because you're a fan of the "models" (Ronda Rousey - Olympic Bronze Medalist in Judo and the current UFC women's champ and Kayla Harrison, Olympic Gold Medalist in Judo and female world judo champion) that's nice but the REAL stars of the book are the authors Dr. DeMars and Mr. Pedro, Sr. Both have been crucial players in American Judo and the chapters in their book offer a lot to both beginning and advanced competitors but also in my opinion to folks who need to work on how to exploit the weaknesses of those who would use the ground game against them. By that I mean BJJ stylists, non-grappler martial artists who end up on the ground, prospective and current MMA folks and even folks who prefer "stand up" who end up going against a grappler with significant skill.

Finally, the book STRONGLY EMPHASIZES training and preparedness. In fact, one point made in the beginning is that thought AND effort are essential for a good ground game. You know everything yet unless you practice it, you won't win. If all you do is work on the mats without thinking about strategy and application, you won't win. Work the techniques in this book, demonstrated by champions who have applied the techniques in actual competitions and you have a much better chance!

Bottom line - this is simply one of the best books out there on the subject and an essential part of any martial artists library - but more importantly a book that needs to be READ and APPLIED. Kudos to Coach Pedro, Sr., Dr. DeMars and all the rest.

Just right

Fantastic book for any level Judoka or even grappler. Instead of putting a lot of techniques in the book focuses on the right techniques executed the right way in the right mind set. This makes this book the right read whether you're looking to tighten up your game or are new and want inspirational introduction that limits bad habits. The Doctor is definitely in.

One of the best judo books I own (out of about 100)

I began collecting judo (and some BJJ) books about 7 years ago--classics, new ones, rare and expensive, and not-so-rare--all in an effort to find that perfect book or two that can help me with judo (my obsession). I'm not young (49) so over the past couple years I've been gravitating more away from the high-amplitude, dynamic throwing techniques, and more towards the ground / grappling techniques where I can still be competitive--the pins, strangles, and armlocks. This book completely fulfills my needs for a manual on how to develop a winning strategy and seamlessly transition from a throw to a pin or submission. It's straightforward, pithy, well-written, and logical. And, it's non-conventional, which is refreshing. It should be in any judoka's or BJJ-er's library.

Passion is--even for Stephen Sondheim--a remarkable musical, a brooding meditation on love and passion that is at once simple and deeply moving. In it, Sondheim, often criticized for being cerebral, proves he can write a show's worth of lush, emotionally honest songs. Moreover, a close reading of Lapine's book reveals how much his work contributes to the show's power. Based on Italian filmmaker Ettore Scola's Passione d'Amore (1981) and its source, the novel Fosca (1869) by I. U. Tarchetti, Lapine's book has a polished singleness of purpose rare in musical theater. The dialogue is spare, and the story--about an army officer torn between two lovers, one pretty but shallow the other plain but deep--advances with breathtaking economy. It must, to make way for the songs. Yet the book does not feel incomplete; read without Sondheim's music, the libretto (Lapine's book and Sondheim's own beautiful lyrics) registers as a fully engaging, if somewhat poetic, work that stands complete in its own right. This is one of the most beautiful shows ever written!

While this book is simply amazing... you should either get thecd to listen to while reading this script or watch the movie tohear/see the fabulous performances and Sondheim's glorious music. This book is still worth buying even if you aren't able to hear the score. This play works in mysterious ways and bring out many passionate feelings in anyone with a heart. It conveys and brings forth emotions from anger to pity with Fosca, love and hate, hapiness and depression... This is a truly beautiful book!

The Best Musical Ever Written

Passion is an excellent show. It won the Tony for best musical in 1994.
One of the things that I find most fascinating about this score is the way it flows from song to dialogue and back again. Songs segue into one another without breaking flow or style. There are no set applause points, no big dance numbers, just a moving, touching story told with some of the most beautiful music ever written for the stage.
If you are a Sondheim fan at all, or if you would like to own an achingly beautiful collection of love songs, this is definitely the score for you.
