Poetry. African American Studies. To be instructed by exhortation in scripture from a pulpit is a return to fundamentals; Bryant loves to riff in short exhortations, treatises, assays on the controversial, on the impolitic... Bryant is at heart a teacher; he believes in daylight, so you can see the night-Michael Harper. In Philip Bryant's latest collection of poems, crystal-clear recollections crack with tangible immediacy: Frost/ is on the grass, but the snow is completely gone. The sky/ is clear and deep blue; I don't know spring is coming/ because I am too young to know what season it is (Eleven Short Scenes from My Life). Philip Bryant is an Associate Professor of English at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota.

Phil Bryant is in love with the worlds of flesh, language, music, culture, even his own relatives. He says, 'My jaws are fatigued from smiling.' So will the reader's be. This world has grief and failure too, faced with adult directness, always redeemed by affection for humans and their quirks and gifts. These sermons preach loving wisdom and humor -- Bill Holm, author of The Heart Can be Filled Anywhere on Earth
There is architecture here, and American design. . . . The modalities of the city are everywhere, but there is a grand inquisitiveness to rural values most salient in the eighteenth century. This poet likes to gamble almost as if he hasn't read his predecessors; which means there is a deceptive cunning at work in the modulations of voice and the overtones of the American family. Bryant tries to hide his didactic principles of artistic creation in a lag; this means he is at heart a teacher, he believes in daylight, so you can see the night -- Michael S. Harper, author of Dear John, Dear Coltrane
From the Publisher
Bryant's first book-length collection of poetry and part of the Minnesota Voices Project Series, now in its eighteenth year. Philip Bryant is an African-American poet and professor at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, who grew up in the black community of Chicago's South Side. Yet his debut poetry collection, Sermon on a Perfect Spring Day, was inspired by retired SSU professor Leo Dangel's Old Man Brunner Country, quintessential Midwest poetry about a white man's experiences on a prairie farm.
From the Author
When I read Old Man Brunner Country, something clicked in my mind and I started writing poems about Aunt Janey. My poems are very black, full of vernacular, but inspired by Leo. That's one of the wonderful possibilities of art-it has no boundaries.

A great portrail of Chicago's south side and it's real soul
By Sharon
This book is an excellent portrial of life in Chicago's south side in a time most of us have not lived. In this case the poet is now living Minnesota, which I think gives an even greater prospective on Chicago because of the extream differences between the two places. If you are looking for a refrence on the south side of Chicago and alot of laughs Philip Bryant's book of poetry covers both. I can't wait for more books from this author.
