FREUD REAPPRAISED is a comprehensive and authoritative critique of the fundamental theory of psychoanalysis. It is the first appraisal to consider the humanistic and philosophical as well as the biological, psychological, and medical aspects and antecedents of psychoanalytic theory. With the eye of a concerned friend rather than an attacker or defender, Robert R. Holt, an internationally recognized Freud scholar, presents an erudite analysis of the ills of psychoanalysis. The volume serves as a guide to the reading of Freud and offers a new depth of understanding of the many influences that affected Freud's thought and work.
The volume opens with an historical overview that examines the meanings of the basic theory of psychoanalysis (which Freud called metapsychology), its relation to clinical theory, its development and personal significance to Freud. Dr. Holt also discusses Freud's cognitive style, showing how Freud's unique modes of thinking and writing can easily lend themselves to misinterpretation of his essential message.
Three sections, which constitute the bulk of the work, respectively take up the economic, dynamic, and structural points of view that comprise metapsychology. Each section presents the origins and intellectual history of the major concepts and describes how Freud came to adopt them. Every segment of theory is examined for its underlying philosophical assumptions, its internal consistency, how well it squares with relevant facts, and how tenable it is by the canons of scientific methodology. Because Freud never ceased amending the theory while he lived, the approach takes into consideration the ways in which it developed. The book closes an assessment of psychoanalytic theory as a whole, discussion of major developments since Freud's death, and an appraisal of the prospects for its reform and reinvigoration.
More comprehensive than other works on Freud's attempts to construct a scientific theory and more systematic in its consideration of all aspects of metapsychology, this book will be required reading for all serious students of psychoanalytic theory. Beginning students will find that it explains and clarifies much of what is mystifying or difficult to understand in Freud's work, while the most advanced scholars will be challenged to take a position on Holt's call for fundamental reform. Clinicians who use psychoanalytic theory to any extent will profit from its guidance in holding fast to the parts of Freud's work that have proved lastingly valuable while revising or discarding what is fallacious, anachronistic, or otherwise flawed. Those who are drawn to intellectual history, teachers of psychology and the other disciplines that have been impacted by psychoanalysis, and anyone who has been interested in Freud's ideas while having doubts, confusion, or misgivings about the theory will find the book valuable.

Review
"Robert Holt has written a superb, scholarly, engaging, and important analysis of psychoanalytic theory. The scope of Holt's book is enormous yet he discerningly probes the many difficult areas of psychoanalysis with clarity and subtlety. Freud's legacy is the richer for Holt's gracefully written examination of the basic assumptions and consequences of psychoanalysis. This book sets a new and higher standard for Freud scholarship." --Philip S. Holzman, Ph.D., Harvard University

A COLLECTION OF PAPERS ON A VARIETY OF TOPICS ABOUT FREUD
By Steven H Propp
At the time this book was published in 1989, Robert Holt was Emeritus professor of Psychology at New York University; he has also written books such as Primary Process Thinking: Theory, Measurement, and Research (Psychological Issues), Assessing Personality, etc. He wrote in the Preface, "From Freud we all have learned the importance of looking for the implicit and nonobvious causes of presenting problems... He grappled with such large issues only rarely in any direct way... The result was an important source of subtle confusion and contradiction in his writings." (Pg. v-vi) He adds, "in 1962, I published a series of papers on Freud and on psychoanalytic theory, with the general intent of somehow, sometime rewriting them all into a coherent book-length statement. But the opportunity to do so ... has not come along... The present volume is the result." (Pg. 14)
He states, "I have emphasized the knowingly provisional, tentative nature of Freud's theorizing---his deliberate abjuring of any attempt to build a complete and internally coherent system, in favor of piecemeal empiricism instead. Quite some contrast to the view of Freud as the dogmatic systematist who would brook no deviation from a rigid 'party line' of theory!" (Pg. 50)
He adds, "It is impossible to understand the nature of Freud's split with Adler, Jung, and Rank... unless one appreciates the intensity of Freud's devotion to ... the psychoanalytic movement... Unfortunately, it has become traditional in Freudian circles to take the master's side in these disputes almost entirely... But now that those who had direct contact with his charismatic presence are dying, this tradition is weakening. It cannot hurt psychoanalysis to face the truth about some of the less admirable side of the extraordinarily complex and truly great man who founded it." (Pg. 63)
He suggests, "If Freud had consistently kept to the anatomical/physiological realm, he would never have been able to to make his concept perform such gymnastics ... If he had kept to a consistently 'pure psychology,' he would have had to eschew the attempt to explain ANY condition marked by somatic symptoms. Fortunately ... [he] faced up to psychosomatic complications wherever he met them... sacrificing the internal consistency and clarity of his system rather than deny clinical reality." (Pg. 137)
He argues, "Freud was aware of such influences under the general name of suggestion, and his main argument against it was that the patient's 'conflicts will only be successfully solved and his resistances overcome if the anticipatory ideas he is given tally with what is real in him... But comparative studies of the therapeutic efficacy of psychoanalysis ... have not supported Freud's claim... what all psychotherapies have in common may be nothing much more than the familiar placebo effect; hence, there is NO support for Freud's assumption that neurosis cannot be cured except by accurate interpretations based on a true theory---his." (Pg. 328-329)
Although feeling somewhat like a group of unrelated essays, rather than a complete book, this book will be of considerable interest to anyone studying Freud and his ideas.
