Outdoorsperson Wood, author of The 2 Oz. Backpacker (Ten Speed Pr., 1982) and Pleasure Packing for the '80s (Ten Speed Pr., 1981), shares his hiking experiences and offers advice for novices as well as seasoned walkers. Wood's enthusiasm is conveyed in ten chapters covering major points of interest to the beginning dayhiker: where to find the best trails, how to conserve energy, what to eat, how to select clothing and equipment, how to handle trailside first aid, and how to find a route. Unfortunately, Wood's chapter on map and compass reading is too brief, while his nutritional advice (e.g., eat only fruit before noon) and espousal of homeopathic first aid remedies are open to debate. A lack of a bibliography is an important omission. Nevertheless, there is much valuable information on hiking technique, preparation, and places to go. Recommended as a supplement to public library outdoor recreation collections--especially at this price.
