A Fun Confirmation Of Many Veteran Cruise Passengers' Suspicions

As a frequent cruiser, I know a thing or two about the goings on aboard cruise ships. Being a passenger, it is hard to visualize the stressful conditions that employees must endure to ensure that the good times keep rolling for the paying and playing. I work customer service for a living though so I do have some insight into what it is like to serve the unknowing and at times uncaring public.
For me, this book was not so much a revelation as a realization that my suspicions were correct. The author, Joshua Kinser, spent 5 years working aboard cruise ships. He said in the book he sailed on a lot of Carnival ships, which indeed are the ones I am also most familiar with. Many of the answers to common questions that cruisers have are included in the book and I will not spoil all of that here. Questions answered include the mundane all the way up to the biggies. For example why is it on cruise ships each department seems to come from one nationality? And where are employees going when you see a crowd of them disappear into a tiny locked door that appears to fit into a corner too small to hold a room? He even explains why most cruise ships have Italian crews. The insights here make for a good read for anyone who has ever cruised before.
In short, this is a small book packed with a lot of information and anecdotes. The best things for me are the examples of interactions between crew and passengers, coming from a customer service background as I do. I was laughing very hard through most of it. If you have ever worked with the public before, this only makes the book more endearing. The only downside to this book is that someone who has never cruised before will probably miss some of the jokes so I do suggest that you either take this book on your cruise with you or wait until you get back.
All things considered, I give this book 4 stars. I would give it 5 but I had thought it could have been longer given that the author was a crew member for as long as he was. It educates and entertains with a fair mix of the good and bad sides of the cruise ship experience. I recommend this book.

Funny, but definitely true

Describing life on a cruise ship is not an easy task. Sure, it's possible to list crew members' daily schedules and explain port procedures, but it's another matter entirely to capture the essence of cruise ship work; when asked, most crew members give up and simply say 'You have to work on a boat yourself to understand."
Rising to the challenge, Joshua Kinser has painted both an accurate and insightful picture of what goes on behind the 'Crew Only' doors. His stories are comical and entertaining, yet seem entirely realistic and are extremely reminiscent of things I've seen and stories I've heard. I worked on cruise ships myself for 6 years, and found it very easy to relate to Kinser's memoirs. As well, Kinser is able to pack a ton of information into the book, covering just about every aspect of ship life down to the minute details.
Perhaps Kinser's greatest success in writing 'Chronicles Of A Cruise Ship Crew Member' is the end of the book, where he is able to evoke the extremely mixed feelings that crew members have after working on ships for a long period of time. As Kinser explains, the highs on a cruise ship are so high, and the lows are so low that you don't know whether to hop back on board or run in the opposite direction. And when the book is finished, readers will understand that complexity -- that love-hate relationship -- just like all the crew members who have actually experienced it.
Overall, I found myself agreeing with Kinser again and again in his honest portrayal of life at sea. My only disagreement is over the Jell-O pumpkin pie. Sure, it's pretty gross. But it's also delicious.

Very accurate. Could have used a better editor

I have done six very short contracts as a showband musician on cruise ships. I enjoyed this book. It humorously depicts life as a cruise ship musician. Much of what he says holds true not only for cruise ships but large organizations such as the government and the military. There were parts of this book that were "laugh out loud" funny. Mr. Kinser knows his subject very well.
The book could have used a better editor. Many spelling mistakes (e.g. "employee moral" instead of "employee morale") and tangents detract from an otherwise wonderful book.
