Great hiking companion

Very helpful guide. Plenty of good suggestions. Enough information to allow for modifying routes or combining two shorter hikes into a longer one. With this guide, only weather can get in the way--and it can change so fast in the Blue Ridge that a summer hike turns into a chilly drenching with a view of nothing but fog. But with good weather, this guide proved essential for a week among the Asheville area's mountains and waterfalls.

Incorrect and Incomplete Information

My wife and I just returned from a day-hiking trip to Asheville, NC and had purchased this book (2012 edition paperback) for the trip. In researching hikes before the trip, I found it annoying that the distance from Asheville to each hike is not given. Directions are like "take hyw 40 east to exit 75 and then . . " How far is exit 75? Not being familiar with Asheville, I had no idea untill I got on the highway. No I don't own a GPS, so the GPS coordinates to each hike did not help me one bit. It also helps to have a Blue Ridge Parkway map with the mile-posts listed, since all hikes along the Parkway are referenced to the mile-posts. I would have been nice to know this before hand.
We also found the trail maps in the book to be totally inadequate and in some cases in accurate. You really need a USGS type ACCURATE map (or a GPS I presume) if you want to know where you are. I wish the author would stress how handy a GPS would be in using the book and if you don't have one, then you better get one.
Directions to the trail heads were often inaccurate and confusing. I am an excellent navigator, but was befuddled many a time. The author calls a road you have to take as "Catawba Falls Road" when the road map and the actual road sign says it is "Catawba River Road." Not a big deal, but annoying and you are not 100% sure you have found the right road.
The map and directions to the Rattlesnake Lodge hike are both incorrect. Try it and you'll see for yourself. We spent probably 30 minutes driving back and forth and all around until we finally decided, based on intuition and the process of elimination, that we were at the correct trail head. While the description of this particular hike is pretty accurate, there is no mention of the several side trails that come and go, so you get confused very easily. And, when the directions say take the trail on the left with the blue blaze, and the only blue blaze that is there is on the right, you get confused.
Once we tried 2 or 3 of the trails in this book, and discovered all the little inacuracies and such, we lost all confidence in the book and quit using it, and my comments are based on I believe 3 of the hikes we tried in the book. We left this book behind somewhere in Asheville. By the way, I'm not sure why this book's title is Five Star Trails, since no trail in the book had more than one five-star rating in the areas that are rated: scenery, trail condition, solitude, children (whatever that means), and so on. You have to choose which one of the categories you value most, and hope there are hikes within your ability and distance constraints, or else be willing to settle.
The hiking books I find most helpful in choosing and planning hikes have all of the information in the book, in additon to clear directions and driving times from a common central point in the area (such as downtown Ahseville), not to mention completely accurate information.

Great guide!

Great book! Just got back from a week in the Asheville area and we used this book every day to help decide where to hike. Jennifer's 5-star ratings of scenery, difficulty, trail conditions and solitude was a great help in our daily decision of where we wanted to hike.
