Very Interesting BBQ Cooking book

Love the opening comments and the recipes look well thought out in their presentation. In other words I think I can follow the directions which can't be said of some cook books,LOL, Thanks to Goodwill for quick shipping and a well packaged product!

One Of The Essential BBQ Books Of All Time

When this book came out in 1988, it was pretty much a revelation. I heard about it on NPR, where in an interview Bobby Seale talked about 'Que Bee Rab' - the opposite of real BBQ. Bobby talked about how most people didn't know how to BBQ - they'd stick some sauce on a piece of chicken, throw it on a hot grill, and then watch as the chicken turned into charcoal on the outside and undercooked pink meat on the inside.

I grew up in Massachusetts - not the BBQ capital of the world - and even though my Mom was from Virginia, I'd eaten Que Bee Rab dozens of times...and I thought it was BBQ.

That interview and this book set me off on a lifetime interest obsession with real BBQ. This is the one of the best books on BBQ ever written, and enen though it's out of print it's worth finding. It's more than a collection of recipes - it's easy to read, conversational style gives you an education in BBQ 101.

The key, of course, is 'low and slow' cooking that uses smoke - not fire - to cook the meat. Another key is marinating the meat, and using sauce late in the process, since the key ingredient in BBQ sauce is sugar, and sugar burns.

Bobby also points out the African roots of BBQ, complete with interesting info and recipes. Ultimately, BBQ is one of the USA's big contributions to world cuisine. Just as jazz and blues have their roots in Africian Americian culture, BBQ is an esentially Africian American art form that has filtered though the Americian melting pot of groups as diverse as western cowboy cooking and German immigrants who moved to Texas and brought their sausage making skills with them.

BBQ has also been part of Africian Americian cultural history - the Black Panthers raised money through BBQs, as Seale points out in the book.

Highly recommended, whether you know who Bobby Seale is or not.

Left-Wing Radicals gotta eat!

Anyone who looks at this book will likely be expecting some sort of writings on left-wing radicalism. But that's not what this book is about at all, true, it was written by the co-founder of the Black Panther Party, Bobby Seale, but what he does in 'Barbecue 'N with Bobby', is enlighten us connoiseurs of fine food with barbecue recipes. The recipes are magnificent, and he even tells us some excellent tips on sauces and other types of delacacies. I honestly must stress moderation when using the recipes(before I bought the book I weighed 165 lbs, but now I've bloated up to almost 200lbs!, Bobby's great recipes certainly had something to do with my degeneration into a bloated carbon copy of Che Guevara). If you like barbecues, or like food in general, purchase this book immediately.

Don't buy the e-book (Adobe Download) version

The 1 star review doesn't refer to the content - I agree with other reviews - but to the e-book version. Here's what you don't get in the e-book version:
* the ability to copy/paste text (like driving directions, for example) to any other application (like an email message to your friends about where to meet)
* the ability to lend the book to anyone else.
* the ability to use the text-to-speech feature in the Adobe reader.
* the ability to ever migrate the book to another PC. Yes, that's right, if you get a new PC and trash your old one, this title WILL BE LOST. Adobe doesn't provide a way to move the book to another PC. So, if you are like a number of people and upgrade/replace your PC every few years, your SOL on keeping this book through a new generation of PC. That fact is in no way obvious on the Adobe web site - SHAME on Adobe for effectively conceiling a complete deal-killer.
However, with the exception of the last item, I can't really knock Adobe. It's the...publisher of the book that has decided to lock out all the features of the reader that make the e-book version useful to begin with. At least with the paper version I can loan it to friends or take it on trips. I can't even download text into a PDA. I have sympathy for the issue of copywrite protection, but being able to copy/paste driving directions was the reason I bought the e-book version to begin with. What did they think - I was going to copy/paste the whole book?
The one thing they couldn't/didn't lock out is screen captures. It *is* possible to capture a screen from the reader, save the file as .gif, and then email that. A pain, but it does give me minimal satisfaction that it's possible....

My Colorado Vacation

Johnny Molloy's book on Colorado was a great help. I'd never been to Colorado beore and didn't know where to start. With only two weeks of vacation, I wanted to make every day count. With this book, I enjoyed classic destinations like Rocky Mountain National Parks Timber Creek campground, where elk strolled by my camp and Mesa Verde campground where I saw Anasazi ruins. But the book also led me to lesser known destinations like Dominguez Canyon, a BLM campground on the Uncompahgre Plateau. Here, I fished for trout and did a little mountain biking. My vacation was made complete by this book: not to mention the money I saved tent camping instead of staying in expensive lodges. If you are going to invest you time in visiting Colorado outdoors, invest in this book!

Great book for campers who know what they're looking for.

My husband and I truly enjoy camping in Colorado, and have spent every summer we've lived here touring the state and camping out. We NEVER stay in a hotel. It's so exciting to visit new places and enjoy the beauty of nature. It's so important to me to find "THE" perfect camp site, and sometimes that's not easy when time or resources are limited. Johnny Malloy gives you the right amount of information for each campground he reviews so that you can feel confident that when you get to where you're going, you won't feel disappointed. Some reviews include information about the geography of the area, crowds, activities nearby, and even which site(s) is(are) the best site at the campground. He also includes the elevation of each campground which is important because it gets cold in Colorado at night sometimes! Using this book, you can easily find the right information about a campground so that you can really enjoy your time spent outdoors.

A brief, opinionated, survey

I bought this book to help plan a trip to Paris, so I have only looked at the section dealing with that part of the country.
Each garden is covered in a paragraph or two, a page a most. There are few photographs. I believe the listing is fairly complete, at least compared with the other books I have looked at. With 165 pages there are probably 300-350 gardens.
In my opinion many travel guides are rendered useless by making flat, objective comments about everything, so that you can't get a sense of what is really good vs. what is not. This book isn't like that.
Here are a few short quotes:
Parc Andre Citroen: "Not to be missed".
Jardin des Plantes: "... but anyone expecting a garden comparable to Kew will be dissappointed"
Fontainbleau (one section): "This is the largest parterre he [Le Notre] designed but today, without its patterning of clipped box, it is uninteresting"
This is not a coffee table guide. If you are going to France, and want to visit a few gardens, it is a useful reference.
For more photographs and description I prefer the "Garden Lover's Guide to France".

Ratliffe offers readers an armchair culinary journey on her 80-year-old Dutch barge, the Julia Hoyt, her ``one-table restaurant and two-room hotel,'' as it traverses 88 kilometers, 21 locks, 19 villages and six courses along the Garonne River in southwestern France. After aperitifs and olives come such simple delights as Garlic Soup and Two-Celery Soup. In true French fashion, an entree comes next, an opener such as Grilled Ham with Figs, Wild Mushroom Pie or Salad with Sauteed Fresh Foie Gras. The main course might be Roast Pork Stuffed with Prunes and Shallots, Braised Beef in the Gascon Style or Pan-Grilled Stuffed Trout. Following French custom, a separate vegetable dish comes next, designed to contrast with the main course: for example, a celery root puree after a garlicky roast guinea fowl. Desserts are simple: Summer Fruit Custard Tart, Two-Peach Gratin, Goat Cheese with Armagnac and Honey. Fashioned for preparation in a small galley-kitchen, the recipes are classic ones, often accompanied by a little truc (trick or personal touch) such as adding bittersweet chocolate to a stew. Recipes, maps, photographs and essays on local products and people combine to create almost the satisfaction of being aboard the Julia Hoyt on her leisurely course.

Ratliffe's life will seem idyllic to many-she is the owner of a canal barge based in France's Gascony region, where she offers culinary tours along the Garonne River. She cooks delicious meals in her "bistro-galley," and this book takes the reader on a week-long tour with recipes through her "long village," the towns along the river from the canal's end near Bordeaux to her home port 88 kilometers to the southeast. Recipes are by necessity simple enough to be made in a small, underequipped kitchen, but Ratliffe has all the fresh produce, duck and foie gras, and other specialties of the region to choose from, with enviable results. Recommended for cooks and armchair travelers alike.

A great read and it has tasty easy to make recipies. What more can you want, except to actualy be in France?

A classic! Makes me want to run to kitchen (or Gascony)

I first picked this up at my library, expecting another in the growing genre of "lifestyle fantasy literature" -- you know, bohemian boomer quits rat race, goes abroad, buys quaint house (or boat), creates rustic & soul-satisfying alternative lifestyle and then =tortures= the rest of us by writing a glowing book about it... But now, Ratliffe's work is in a hallowed place on my cookbook shelf between Richard Olney's "Simple French Food" and "Lulu's Provencal Table." Like those books, Ratliffe's takes us deep into the heart (and soul) of a regional French cuisine, through timeless villages and fragrant home kitchens. Even if the book were recipes alone, it would be worth its price for the seasonal simplicity of "asparagus with scallions, mint and green garlic shoots," or "radish leaf soup." But Ten Speed Press has made it a feast for the hand and eye as well, with loving photos of the Garonne canal country and buff paper reminiscent of a sketchbook or travel journal. Few chefs write this well about the daily meditation of cooking, the inspirations, the happy accidents and the patiently learned techniques. Even if you never spend a night on the "Julia Hoyt," by the time you cook your way to "Flan au Floc" for dessert you'll feel you know this land and its people intimately.

Great cookbook and great travel book.

My husband and I and another couple travelled with Kate Ratliffe for a week on the Garonne Canalin her barge, the Julia Hoyt. The book describes both the journey and the wonderful food on board. If you buy the book you'll want to take the trip and if you take the trip you'll want to buy the book! Her 800 number is in the back of the book

About the Author

Illuminating, even for a non-professional

Another positve reviewer said that this book lacks poetry and that is certainly true. This collection of case studies and essays may be written for the clinical professional but I think it has much to recommend to anyone interested in adult survivors of abuse.
The layperson can skip the super-clinical articles and devour the rest for a glimpse into why some children and adults are more invulnerable than others to abuse and tragedy whose wounds are often a crippling or mortal blow. It was a remendously validating experience to read these stories of why and how others have done more than survive devastating abuse and tragedy.

Excellent Resource

An expertly written, scholarly perspective on how some individuals can grow into productive and healthy adults despite horrific childhoods. In an era where it seems every criminal or unkind act is blamed on an abusive childhood, it is helpful to have an scientific perspective on the aspect rarely discussed. Certainly abuse is damaging and contributes to aberrant behaviors, but to know how and why a very few come of out of such situations with their sanity intact is of great interest and importance. When an individual shares a childhood filled with abuse, they are judged as harboring anger, hurt, that they are incapable of having a healthy relationship. This book demonstrates that this stereotype is not always true. It's not a novel and is written for an academic audience, so of course the language is not easily readable as evidenced by the reviewers here who seek poetry. Highly recommended for content and importance.

Good Guide to paddling Florida

This is a good guide packed full with good info. You are going to need to buy a DeLorme atlas for Florida along with it. The maps in the book are pretty scant.

Saved me a trip

Very interested in paddling some of Florida's spring fed creeks, one of which was the Wakualla. I was unware that the best stretch of this river was not open to canoes in the state park area. Thanks to this book, I saved a tank of gas and a bunch of frustration from a trip I had begin planning a week or two earlier. It is always best to consult with the locals but this book is the next best thing and well worth its price.

Good Resource

Good resource for anyone paddling in Florida but some of the information is dated concerning put-ins and take-outs. I would recommend it.
