About the Author
Eric Oram is one of the world’s leading authorities on wing chun kung fu, having taught the art for more than 25 years to law enforcement, professional athletes, celebrities, and the general public. He is one of the most senior disciples of Bruce Lee’s primary teacher, Grandmaster William Cheung. He supervised fight choreography on the motion pictures Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and Sherlock Holmes and has written for or been featured in American Health and Fitness, Black Belt Magazine, Inside Kung Fu Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, Men’s Journal, Sports Illustrated, and Vanity Fair. He also appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show alongside student Robert Downey Jr. He lives in Santa Monica, California.

NOT a Soft Art... but a COMBATIVE!

Disclaimer - I am not a practitioner of Wing Chun Kung Fu and have received no formal training in the form. I have been interested in Wing Chun Kung Fu for many years and thought of adding it to my combatives program but unfortunately have no local studios or instructors. So the next best alternative was to look for a stand out book and or DVD. In the search I bought the DVD "Wing Chun: The Science of In-Fighting" by Master Wong Shun Leung, which is an excellent look at the foundation of this form for the uninitiated. However, the DVD is very dated in the technology used to produce (or reproduce it). The second item I picked up was this book "Modern Wing Chun Kung Fu - A Practical Guide to Combat and Self-Defense" by Eric Oram. What I quickly liked about this book flipping through it was the format. It is a large book with easy to read print, with supporting black & white photography just as easy to understand. What I quickly learned from this book is that Wing Chun is not a "soft" art by any means but a very practical fighting form that is readily adaptable to grappling, boxing and kickboxing, generally a good addition to your Mixed Martial Arts fighting package for the street. The book covered Wing Chun history briefly and theory of principles, how to cope with other marital styles; as well as the core movements of using your limbs (footwork, kicks, hand and arm strikes) with reflex training. All of this is packaged into a self-defense perspective for the defeat of armed attackers and multiple opponents. Another interesting side note is the foreword is by Robert Downey Jr. (actor from Iron Man I & II and Sherlock Holms) that gives an interesting insight to his perspective of Wing Chun. Overall my opinion is from a combative practitioner stand point and background, I think this an excellent addition to well rounded fighter, with this book deserving a respectable place in your library.

A "MUST HAVE" for any serious Wing Chun Practioner!

This book is the nuts and bolts of the system as explained by one of the best TWC practitioners around. I recently opened my own Traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu school here in Charlotte and this book is required reading for all of my students. The verbiage used to describe techniques, explain application and strategy is both articulate and effective. The illustrations are extremely helpful as well!

Good practical overwiev

This book gives the reader a good look at the practical aspect of Wing Chun Kung Fu - William Cheung linage.
Layout and text does a great job communicating the writers point of wiews in a clear manner. The pictures are black and white, but fairly big and easy to follow.
One of the many things i liked about the book was that it did not cover the forms of the system. These forms often fill the entire book... But her we get principals, concepts, examples of partner drills and possible self defense solutions using the core techniques of the system. I belive that focusing on the big picture rather than form and technical details makes the text more usefull regardless off style or linage. The solutions to grappling and ground defense are alsoe refreshing to look at from a combative perspective.
Some basic knowledge of Wing Chun or Martial art is an obvious advantage. The book covers combative Wing Chun solutions not the initial learning of kicks or punches.
