The book includes two comprehensive manuals, each providing theoretical background, descriptions of procedures, forms, and reviews of available research. The first manual describes the Mediated Learning Experience Rating Scale. This scale adapts Feuerstein's concept of MLE, postulated to describe adult activities within an adult-child interaction that facilitate the child's cognitive development. The scale is useful for assessment and consultation with both parents and teachers and, in addition, it also describes the behavior of the assessor during the course of dynamic assessment.
The second manual describes the author's model for dynamic assessment. This model rests on a theory of neuropsychological foundations of mental processing as developed by Luria and elaborated by Naglieri and Das. The model preserves the test-intervene-retest format, focuses on learner modifiability and, most significantly, links the assessment with educational interventions.
Detailing the implementation of an actual dynamic assessment procedure that is linked with educational interventions, this book is a valuable guide for diagnostic assessors from a wide variety of backgrounds including school, clinical, and counseling psychology, as well as special and regular education and speech and language pathology. PRACTITIONER'S GUIDE TO DYNAMIC ASSESSMENT also serves as a text for advanced graduate courses in assessment.

In fact, the strongest poems in this collection (which was selected, by Nicholas Christopher, as the 1988 winner of the Capricorn Poetry Prize, sponsored by the Writer's Voice program of New York's Westside YMCA's Center for the Arts) are those that present "the remains of a heritage I feel everyday" most directly. Her short forays into familial, historical, and spiritual territories are inspired by stories, ceremonies, and visions passed down and invented, and spiked with images that surprise and inform: "the bundle of supper in our belly," the ancestors who "giggle under the bed/when I sleep their/new hunting ground the/floor of the dream." This is an excellent, original volume, one woman's brave attempt to fashion a personal voice from the cries and whispers of her Native American past. -- From Independent Publisher

If you are like me, you are bored with the modern American poetry scene (save for a handful of fine writers). Might I suggest Native American poetry? Native American authors are publishing some of the finest poetry I have ever read - it is very real, it shakes you to the bone! In "Iron Woman", Diane lets us in to feel the unique emotions, see the unusual visions of a mixed-blood life. I'm only sorry such authors do not receive the recognition they deserve. Excellent poetry!

Mickler's White Trash Cooking helped lead the backlash against nouvelle cuisine fussiness: his "rococo-cola" recipes and southern-fried anecdotes re-enthroned the tackier aspects of American cooking and redneck life in general. Thanks to him, we don't question the value of good-old-boy-style eating as we once didand this seems to have put Mickler in a quandary. His new cookbook tries to carry on the White Trash tradition, focusing on both the eats and the human parade that accompany funerals, quilting bees, family reunion picnics and other "sacred and secular ceremonies." But the proud provincialism and hillbilly humor that propelled White Trash Cooking now seem stale, and the author's attempt to mimic regional argot palls quickly. Perusing the recipes, one suspects that cooks of the rural South deserve better than an extended joke on their fondness for Cool Whip. Recipes from the "Hawg Killins" chapters are the best; they return to a cooking heritage that thrived before the age of nondairy toppings and canned soups.

This kind of cooking is elegance through simplicity!

For the record, "Sinkin Spells, Hot Flashes, Fits and Cravins" is the original title for "White Trash Cooking II". They are one and the same. Whatever you do, regardless of the title you buy it under --- DO BUY IT!
I have the original "White Trash Cooking" and this is more of the same. Anyone can cook like this and you don't need all those expensive, fancy herbs and spices. In fact, you don't need much more than salt and pepper. I sit and read these cookbooks like novels. They remind me of my simple roots and I feel like these people are my people. These books are portals to honest and simple times, people and food.

I grew up in a small town in South Dakota, population 300. When I read this entertaining cookbook it brought back memories of that town. The stories, pictures, recipes - it's a winner!

Is It A Story or a Recipe? It's both!!

Not sure which is better--the stories or the recipes. The one about hot flashes is priceless and left me giggling hysterically (being a woman of a certain age- lol). I bought this cookbook back in what--the late 80s/early 90s--something like that. I just realized it was missing a while ago--the result of a breakup I'm afraid. But I thought enough of it and the original White Trash Cookbook (it was missing too!) that I replaced them both. Bosie's BBQ sauce and the high calorie pick-me-up cannot be lost to be.

First love through empty-nest, "Art of Cooking for Two" sees me through.

Like another reviewer, my copy of this book dates back to my first real (and only) live-in boyfriend. It has seen me through the years; their basics section has the easiest approach to quiche I have ever seen. You can make any kind of quiche you want based on their basic recipe.

This gem has been a much returned-to book on my kitchen shelf. I am happy to buy another copy for my just-got-her-masters' daughter.

I wish it would be reprinted.

Out of the dorm and into the kitchen

Still in college but deciding dorm life and food wasn't for me, this cookbook was the first and only one I had in my first real apartment in my first real kitchen with my first real boyfriend. This book kept us in healthy meals and I'm pretty sure it helped keep us together (my boyfriend and I) since our main activity as a couple was to come home from school or work and have dinner. The proportions designed for two people made shopping and preparation a cinch for a beginner like me. There is also a great variety in styles and tastes throughout so it is useful when I want to get creative. Simple and economical dishes as well as imaginative and unusual cuisine. A great all around cookbook!

wonderful book

A friend found this book in paperback form and after seeing it, I knew I had to have a copy for myself. The hardback book is really wonderful. This is an older cookbook with many familiar recipes and some surprising new ones. I am no chef, but really enjoy cooking and this book has great recipes and the art work is beautiful. The book was delivered quickly and was in great shape when it arrived.

The ultimate guide to paddling whitewater in the Ozarks, A Canoeing & Kayaking Guide to the Ozarks (formerly Ozark Whitewater) has guided boaters to the best water in the area for years. Inside, boaters will find expanded and updated information for the classic rivers as well as for the extreme creeks.
Also included is information vital to all paddlers, beginner and expert alike: information on clubs and organizations, state water trails, and national and scenic rivers. Ratings and descriptions include topographic maps, country locations, gauges, difficulty ratings, drop/distances, run times, water quality, and much more.

About the Author
Tom Kennon began paddling in 1974 and wrote his first book in 1978, Arkansas Whitewater Rivers, after gathering information about rivers in Arkansas due to the lack of information about paddling in the area. In 1988 Ozark Whitewater expanded the original book to a more comprehensive description of rivers in the Ozarks. He lives in Fort Smith, Arkansas and is still an active paddler and ACA canoe instructor closely associated with the Arkansas Canoe Club.

West Cedar Creek drops at a rate of 40 feet per mile in this section and continuous class II and III rapids can characterize it. The paddler is greeted with a good class II drop at the put in. The Creek is constricted on both sides by bedrock, creating a fast flow with good eddies and surfing opportunities. Another good drop is just below the Highway 162 Bridge followed by a rapid that drops through a tight boulder field that requires precision moves at just the right moment. The rapid can be run on the river right or river left chutes. The left chute is more difficult and drops into a hole that can be a boat eater at higher levels. The right chute requires an approach from middle river left to river right in preparation for a quick left then right maneuver to run this rapid successfully. Class II rapids continue non-stop for approximately one quarter mile and then the paddler encounters a class II+ slide ledge that takes the paddler under a large rock shelf with no danger. It is just spectacular! Note the waterfall on the right side of the creek! The creek swings to the left (east) and drops over a four-foot waterfall that should be run on river left. There are several good surfing holes here. The paddler encounters a low water bridge less that a quarter mile from the falls. Pull out on river left and portage to avoid the culverts in the bridge. This is alternate Put-in for this section that can be used to shorten the trip by approximately one mile. The creek continues with sporty class II rapids for a short distance then East Cedar Creek enters on river left as the paddler passes under the old wagon bridge. Just below the confluence of East Cedar Creek the paddler encounters a class II+ run that is very exciting. Not far downstream the creek splits. Take the left channel and prepare for a very tight fast run. One should always be on the lookout for fallen trees! Just downstream, the confluence of Cedar Creek enters on right, as the creek turns left. Eddy out and surf the waves here! Just downstream is a low water ford. River left is the safe route. Hydraulics form from the middle to river right of the low water ford. The creek slows its drop for the next two miles but the current still moves and very little paddling is required.

Very Good Guide

I really like this book for it's no non-sense practical descriptions of the streams listed in the book. I have been to a couple not listed in the book that I wish he would have covered, so I could compare my experiences (Black River by Lesterville thru Sam Baker State Park for example). But that said, this is a comprehensive guide, very helpful.

Thus far I'm quite happy with this book. The number of places where kayaking is available AND legal is great. I come from a state where landowner rights trumps everything and places to do any river kayaking is skimpy to say the least. I haven't run any of these rivers yet but I think this guide that tells me where to put in, where to take out and what to expect in between will be invaluable. I wish it had some info on how to arrange for vehicle shuttle or kayak shuttle, however there is a lot of contact information for canoe and kayak organizations that might be able to point me in the right direction. The thing I liked are the sections about obstacles to avoid or be aware of. If you're looking for a state to go kayaking in, this might be the book for you.

Good book, no map

If you are needing a comprehensive guide for canoeing the ozarks this is a good book. It doesn't, however, have an overall map. The ozarks are spread across many states and this book explains where the rivers are but without any overall maps it requires a lot of cross-referencing with maps and other guidebooks.

No, this isn't a cookbook for those expecting the imminent end of the world. Its name comes from San Francisco's popular vegan restaurant, Millennium. As more people follow vegetarian regimes for the health benefits of low-fat cooking, an upscale restaurant catering to their needs is a welcome phenomenon. Millennium takes food very seriously, and it raises vegan cuisine to new levels. Although tempeh substitutes for meat in a number of recipes, there's a welcome absence of vegetarian chilis and lasagnas. Instead, chefs make use of both ordinary and uncommon grains and flavor them with lots of lively seasonings, such as chipotle peppers. In conformance with vegan rules, dairy products are taboo, so the dessert recipes make use of milk substitutes. Serious vegetarians looking for diet variety will eagerly welcome the new horizons this cookbook opens, but reproducing these vegan recipes successfully at home demands no little kitchen savvy. Delicious Gourmet Vegan fare but not for the average cook

The layout of the book was lovely and crisp -- nice photos,roomy margins for notes.

The recipes are delicious and since there are few fancy vegan cookbook collections out there, vegans will LOVE it! For entertaining or more elaborate menus it's a real treat!

For the average cook or the average palate -- it's going to be hit or miss. I would not suggest this book to a new vegetarian or a non-vegetarian trying to incoporate a few vegetarian meals a week into their diet. For them I'd point to 1,001 Low-Fat Vegetarian Recipes by Sue Spitler or The McDougall Quick & Easy Cookbook by Mary McDougall, John A., M.D. McDougall

Most of the recipes in Millenium rely heavily on fresh, quality ingredients and herbs and spices that will be difficult to find in a "regular" grocery. If they are there, they might not be fresh, because they don't sell as often in a regular store and this will affect the resulting dish. Ingredients that sit on the shelf gathering dust and losing flavor, particularly herbs and spices that these recipes rely on, are NOT going to yield tasty results.

While vegans/vegetarians with experience shopping at other places will have no problem, the average person will be a little puzzled as to where to find shiitake, miso, tofu, anise, fennel, nutritional yeast, Rice Dream, etc.

The busy person will also not have time to deal with making these recipes -- they require more effort, skill, time. Those with more experience will find the recipes easy to follow, those who work primarly from cans, pre-made mixes, and 5 or less ingredients might find the recipes daunting and they might find cooking gourmet fare from scratch a challenge.

While the rewards are delicious, this isn't the cookbook I'd head to on a tiring Monday night after work!

The recipes are also generous with 6-8 servings -- in my 2 person family, it's too much food for us. You can expect to have to adjust the numbers if you are a small family.

Overall I think it was a wonderful book, and a welcome addition to my collection. I'd still put it towards the "advanced" end of the spectrum though.

The Millennium Cook Book

I made the Lentil Stew, which was delicious. Next I made the moussaka. My husband and I loved it, and will make it again. It is better than meat based moussaka. There is a recipe on how to make seitan, various ways to flavor it. There recipes using seitan, either homemade or store bought. The next recipe I want to try is "Roasted corn mushroom tamales with mushroom-chile cream sauce." The recipes are involved, which are reflected in the the "gourmet" taste of the food.

My husband and I eat fish and chicken. I wanted to use the recipes from this cookbook for at least a month to lower our cholesterol and perhaps our weight.

I went through the cookbook, to match the recipes to the sauces. I made the vegetable stock, mushroom stock and asian stock and froze them to save one step in the preparation of future recipes. The next recipe I want to make will need 2 teaspoons of chipotle paste. The recipe makes 1 cup. I will freeze it in portions needed for other recipes to have that on hand.

I intend to make every recipe in this cookbook. I have other vegetarian cookbooks. But the results of the recipes that I have tried are amazing and well worth the effort.

The best cookbook in a very long time. If you REALLY like to cook, have a well stocked spice cupboard and don't mind orchestrating recipies with several parts, the results are stunning. If you are used to Julia Child's style, this is a whole new language of flavors. Have faith, make the Oat Walnut Pnacakes with Blueberry-Orange Sauce or the Plantain Torte and amaze yourself. The index is terrible, the measuremen
ts include "a bunch" and there are careless errors but this is original art--when is the last time you found a cookbook filled with original masterpieces? No need to be vegetarian. This is no cholesterol cooking and these are gourmet recipies!

One can't help but sympathize with Norton as she details the struggles between herself and her husband. I'd recommend this book to any of my feminist friends!
