About the Author
Hayward Nishioka is the author of Judo Heart and Soul and The Judo Textbook. He is a professor of physical education and health at Los Angeles City College. He is a level "A" coach, an international referee, and a former member of the USA World Team, having received a gold medal at the 1967 Pan American Games and been named a three-time national champion. He lives in Los Angeles.

Terrific for both coaches and competitors

This is an outstanding step by step guide for anyone serious about competing in judo and related arts like BJJ and MMA. Written by one of the most respected judo leaders in the world. Judo Gene LeBell said the best compliment you can get is to be called a 'Hayward' and I agree with him 100%. In his latest book all the secrets of what it takes today to become a world class champion are revealed in great detail.

Ron Angus is a true gentleman Judoka

I have worked out with Ron Angus in Canada and he is a true gentleman. A very clean fighter and when you gain an advantage on him, he concedes it like a gentleman. (I should say that if anyone is able to gain an advantage on Angus, he is a lucky man!). It was a pleasure to meet and work with Ron Angus so I wanted to have a copy of his book. Ron is a professional Judoka who has given up other opportunities in life to dedicate himself to Judo.

Coaching for Winners

Great book! If you are a beginner, you will get a good idea of what coaches do or should do for their competitive players. If you are an experienced Judoka, you will get the information to apply good coaching to your competitive students. Some of the book is quite technical but still easily understandable with a little effort. I can't think of any reason that this book should not be in the library of any serious Judoka.
