A Fun Confirmation Of Many Veteran Cruise Passengers' Suspicions

As a frequent cruiser, I know a thing or two about the goings on aboard cruise ships. Being a passenger, it is hard to visualize the stressful conditions that employees must endure to ensure that the good times keep rolling for the paying and playing. I work customer service for a living though so I do have some insight into what it is like to serve the unknowing and at times uncaring public.

For me, this book was not so much a revelation as a realization that my suspicions were correct. The author, Joshua Kinser, spent 5 years working aboard cruise ships. He said in the book he sailed on a lot of Carnival ships, which indeed are the ones I am also most familiar with. Many of the answers to common questions that cruisers have are included in the book and I will not spoil all of that here. Questions answered include the mundane all the way up to the biggies. For example why is it on cruise ships each department seems to come from one nationality? And where are employees going when you see a crowd of them disappear into a tiny locked door that appears to fit into a corner too small to hold a room? He even explains why most cruise ships have Italian crews. The insights here make for a good read for anyone who has ever cruised before.

In short, this is a small book packed with a lot of information and anecdotes. The best things for me are the examples of interactions between crew and passengers, coming from a customer service background as I do. I was laughing very hard through most of it. If you have ever worked with the public before, this only makes the book more endearing. The only downside to this book is that someone who has never cruised before will probably miss some of the jokes so I do suggest that you either take this book on your cruise with you or wait until you get back.

All things considered, I give this book 4 stars. I would give it 5 but I had thought it could have been longer given that the author was a crew member for as long as he was. It educates and entertains with a fair mix of the good and bad sides of the cruise ship experience. I recommend this book.

Funny, but definitely true

Describing life on a cruise ship is not an easy task. Sure, it's possible to list crew members' daily schedules and explain port procedures, but it's another matter entirely to capture the essence of cruise ship work; when asked, most crew members give up and simply say 'You have to work on a boat yourself to understand."

Rising to the challenge, Joshua Kinser has painted both an accurate and insightful picture of what goes on behind the 'Crew Only' doors. His stories are comical and entertaining, yet seem entirely realistic and are extremely reminiscent of things I've seen and stories I've heard. I worked on cruise ships myself for 6 years, and found it very easy to relate to Kinser's memoirs. As well, Kinser is able to pack a ton of information into the book, covering just about every aspect of ship life down to the minute details.

Perhaps Kinser's greatest success in writing 'Chronicles Of A Cruise Ship Crew Member' is the end of the book, where he is able to evoke the extremely mixed feelings that crew members have after working on ships for a long period of time. As Kinser explains, the highs on a cruise ship are so high, and the lows are so low that you don't know whether to hop back on board or run in the opposite direction. And when the book is finished, readers will understand that complexity -- that love-hate relationship -- just like all the crew members who have actually experienced it.

Overall, I found myself agreeing with Kinser again and again in his honest portrayal of life at sea. My only disagreement is over the Jell-O pumpkin pie. Sure, it's pretty gross. But it's also delicious.

Very accurate. Could have used a better editor

I have done six very short contracts as a showband musician on cruise ships. I enjoyed this book. It humorously depicts life as a cruise ship musician. Much of what he says holds true not only for cruise ships but large organizations such as the government and the military. There were parts of this book that were "laugh out loud" funny. Mr. Kinser knows his subject very well.

The book could have used a better editor. Many spelling mistakes (e.g. "employee moral" instead of "employee morale") and tangents detract from an otherwise wonderful book.

A Must Read for Life Story Writers and Teachers

Many books on writing are written by those who love to write and love to read their own writing; therefore, they are long winded and difficult to absorb in a timely way so one can get on with one's own writing. This book is written by someone who is obviously passionate about sharing his knowledge and experience in a succinct and compelling way, thus making it possible to read in several sittings. I love this book and appreciate greatly this author's gift for writing as Joseph Pulitzer admonishes us to write: "Put it to them briefly so they will read it, clearly so they will appreciate it, picturesquely so they will remember it, and, above all, accurately so they will be guided by its Light."

For those who want to understand the power of story, who use story, engage in storytelling, or listen to others' stories in therapy, this is a geat read.

I am a retired psychologist, a Spellbinder storyteller performing for thousands of school children and also adults, married Catholic priest and former coach, using stories in all those capacities.

Those curious about the powr of story in their lives, will find this an inspirational source to continue that journey.

Well written, scholarly references, and will hold your interest.

Kendall, PhD, ABBP, is Professor of Psychology and Head of the Division of Clinical Psychology at Temple University and Research Professor of Psychiatry at the Medical College of Pennsylvania. The Editor of the journal Cognitive Therapy and Research, and Associate Editor of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, he also serves on the editorial boards of a number of other professional journals. Widely published, Dr. Kendall has lectured throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, Australia, Europe, and South America. He is a past President of the Association for Advancement of Behavior Therapy and Section III of the Division of Clinical Psychology of APA, and is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Disheartening news for future therapists

Although I have not yet used cog-B interventions when working with children or adolescents, I was ready to be "wowed" by the information put forth by this book. However, the information that was conveyed was very disappointing. In the sections that dealt with externalizing and internalizing disorders, the gist of the information that was presented was that while cog-B tools often have the potential to be helpful, the research has not resulted in very inconsistent results. Therefore, the research puts into question both the efficacy of cog-B and point of using cog-B in the first place. Another fault of this book is that the chapter authors often point out aspects that are important to take into consideration such as the influence of developmental milestones and the family on a child, but then they fail to elaborate on these aspects.

Very Limited

I really hate to give any book a negative review, but this book is very short and limited, showing only 4 play structures to build. They each have big moveable sections which are supposed to be fun for kids to rearrange their play structure. It is a good concept but these pieces are big and a kid could get injured very easily by dropping one on themselves or another child. Contrary to the books description, this does NOT include plans on building a climbing net or a climbing rope (which was the main reason I bought it in the first place).

The first third of its limited pages tells you "why" you should build a play structure. You probably have a reason why you want to build or you would not be trying to read a book on it. What we want to know is "how" to build one. Thankfully I came back to Amazon and found out there are much better books on the subject like the David Stiles books. Now he knows how to build imaginative play structures, play houses, and tree houses. The book on this page mentions in the beginning how great treehouses are, but has no instructions how to build one in the entire book. If you are in doubt borrow it from the library before buying, otherwise I do not reccommend.

Have used the play gym plan for twenty years works great

We used this book and built the play gym back in 1989, we bought a slide and attached it, and swing seats and it worked great. Also later attached a climbing wall, and tire swing. The only issue we had was with the wood screws on the dowels. It has now served well over twenty children (we are foster parents), much bigger than typical play structures, and more durable. It had removable parts but no one has ever been injured as a previous reviewer was concerned over. Great buy for the money, with projects even a novice like me could follow.

I given this book in hopes of helping me build a play area for my son. The book was informative, but it did have limited ideas for play areas. It was a good reference tool, but again iI am looking for another book with more options and building ideas for the weekend builder.

A handy reference for chart hounds like myself

This book, the companion to "Top Pop Albums 1955-2001", is a great resource for people into popular music chart data. In case the book's description isn't clear, this is the kind of thing you can do with this book:
Do you want to make a compilation of every artist who recorded "Yesterday" on an album that charted on Billboard's pop album chart? This book lists, by song title, the artist name and year that the artist released an album with that song on it. Then you can look in the "Top Pop Albums" book to find out the name of the album the song was on.
My two criticisms of this book are that (a) it lumps recordings of different songs with the same song title together and (b) the cover doesn't match the companion book. As to the latter, since this book is really best thought of as part of a set, it would make sense to me to have their bindings appear similar. As to the former, if the reader has extensive knowledge of music he/she will probably be able to recognize song title entries that actually refer to more than one song; others may get confused and think that, for example, Kool and the Gang covered the Association's "Cherish."

Approximately 5,000 species of ladybugs!

In this beautiful, informative, well written book, on each double spread there is one full page picture and one page of writing along with a smaller diagram. The font is large with the "important" words in bold, making this book great for independent readers or for use as a read aloud. If your child has a school project to do then this book would be a good resource.

What do we learn in this book? A very brief summary follows:
Ladybugs are insects with three body parts and one pair of wings. They do not have nests or permanent homes, that's why they like your house when it is cold!
A female ladybug lays 10 to 20 eggs at a time in a cluster.
If you have never seen a ladybug larva you might be in for a surprise! It looks NOTHING like a ladybug. In fact the book describes it as looking "like a tiny alligator!" And yes, the larva eats aphids and mites as soon as it hatches. A larva will molt 3-4 times.
From a larva, it then turns into a pupa which "looks a little bit like a small shrimp."
After metamorphosis out emerges the adult ladybug.
Some ladybugs are poisonous.

This is a well written, educational book for children. The pictures are magnified so show a lot of detail for fascinated eyes. At the back of the book there is Life Cycle Page followed by a glossary for all the words highlighted in the text. On the very back page there are some suggested activity websites where you can create and color ladybugs plus a couple of suggested books.

Amazing read!

I had to take a cross-cultural missions class this summer from Dr. Jim Lo. I never had Jim during any of my IWU undergrad work, so my perception of him was that he was the token missions guy... and he was Asian.

(Yes, I'm being quite confessionally raw here... bear with me)

At first I found myself amused at the fact that we'd be studying a book the professor wrote. As I dug into it, though, I was amazed at the different experiences Jim has endured simply by growing up Asian in America. Coupled with several of his stories about missionary experiences and speaking engagements at conferences, I truly found myself sucked into the world of global Christianity for the first time. The end result was that I actually began to see missions less as a program or something I did but more an organic part of who I am and what I am called to do.
