Thus, when clinical observations of the first patients on regular dialysis therapy suggested an inverse relationship between duration of dialysis sessions and severity of peripheral neuropathy, long and frequent dialysis sessions were considered the only way to prevent the catastrophic consequences of nerve damage and underdialysis syndrome. It was then, in 1971, when dialysis duration was 8- 12 hours per session, that Vincenzo Cambi started a 'short dialysis' trial, i. e. , 4 hours 3 times weekly or 3 hours every second day. For the first time, dialysis was shortened from 24-36 hours weekly to 10. 5-12 hours weekly [1, 2]. In 1971 I was still at the Parma University Hospital. We had both just returned from the United States, and Dr. Cambi was responsible for the dia lysis unit.

This book will fire up even the most timid explorer. Light and compact, it slips into a backpack for thumbing on the trail.

I'm a Cleveland native and grew up right near the Metroparks. I spent my summers in swimming pools, but after reading the book, I realize I've missed out on a great deal of what the area has to offer. I also learned that it's not too late to strap on some hiking boots and explore the parks! As the editor of a regional newspaper, I'm no stranger to non-fiction and 60 Hikes is THE nature book to buy. 60 Hikes was an easy read that made sense to me. I'm inspired to get up, get out and take a hike!

For maximum stability, stay loose! Imagine hinging your body at the waist. Keep your upper body and head over the centerline of the boat as you swing your hips from side to side. Start off by tipping the boat just a little back and forth, side to side. Staying flexible as the boat moves in the water is the key to maintaining balance. Most kayaks are very stable, as long as you keep your balance. Leaning out over the side of the boat with your upper body is an easy way to turn over.

In the days before chefs were celebrities, this book takes you back to the time when there were only a handful of world class chefs and restaurants in the city by the bay. Sadly, many of the restaurants featured are no longer around, which makes the recipes and stories even more of a treat. For those that are still serving diners in San Francisco, the book gives you a glimpse into a style of cooking that was then out of the reach of most home cooks. Each chapter is devoted to a particular restaurant, and offers recipes for a complete menu suggested by the chef, including wine. Although many of recipes are now easily made at home (even somewhat dated by today's standards), fine cuisine never goes out of style, and the recipes from Fournou's Ovens, Kans, Ernie's, The Blue Fox, Sam's Grill, Trader Vic's and Gaylord (among others) will allow you to recapture (and appreciate) just how far we've come in the kitchen.

Personal authority therapy prepares clients to talk directly to their parents as adults and equals and, therefore, without fear. Through hearing the personal narrative of each parent's life firsthand and exploring the private meanings of significant events and relationships, sons and daughters can both demystify and humanize their parents. It is this humanization that ultimately resolves intergenerational intimidation. The goal is to create a family of former parents and former children who share psychological freedom of action and interaction as adults. This creates the conditions for intimacy. The former parent no longer has any special position of power, control, or privilege inherent in the old role; the former child no longer has any obligation to attentiveness, obedience, or overriding loyalty. What is now given, is given freely.

THE INTIMACY PARADOX demonstrates that psychological power and control can and must be redistributed across generational boundaries, so that parents and (former) children can achieve psychological and relational equality. For all professionals engaged in family therapy, this work presents an innovative psychotherapy method for ending intergenerational intimidation while fostering intimacy, love, and a renewed sense of family identification.

Personal Authority

This book has been most helpful for me in developing a better sense of myself by exploring my place in the family system in which I grew up. In particular it enabled me to claim my own authority in relationship to my parents. Williamson's theory is that it is essential to find a way of eliminating the inter-generational hierarchical boundary that is created in the parent-child relationship in order to fully develop our sense of personal authority. The goal is to find a means to begin to relate with parents as peers once we have attained adulthood. When this is accomplished, paradoxically the intimacy deepens as this new relationship develops.

Though Blue Trout and Black Truffles is billed as Culinary journey, and it is at that, it is also something completely unexpected, an introduction to European life in the 1920s through 1940s. The exploration of food and wine is coupled with vibrant characters and unforgettable settings.

Classic enjoyable gastronomic essays and interviews

Wechsberg's book is an established classic on a par with those of A. J. Liebling and Waverly Root. Like those other authors, Wechsberg was a journalist who wrote about food, restaurants, and food cultures in the mid-20th century, and his insights and great storytelling give the writing a permanent appeal. This can be seen from the reaction after this essay collection (whose chapters were originally written as magazine articles) appeared in this reprint edition in the mid-1980s. I was at a Christmas party with some accomplished food folks, including Paul Bertolli of the Chez Panisse in Berkeley, and was recounting to someone one of the stories ("Tafelspitz for the Hofrat") from this book. When I finished I found that most of the room was listening, and that many of them, independently, had recently read the book too. That particular essay, by the way, has lately been re-discovered in Vienna, where it was set, and has been proudly adopted by some restaurants there. In this book Wechsberg interviewed, and popularized to US readers, the legendary Fernand Point, chef and owner of the 20th-century's most famous and influential restaurant in France (and for whom the _Guide Michelin_ reportedly debated adding a fourth star to their rating system for premium restaruants). Some of the chapters are interviews, some experiences and some celebrations of food. This book is well known and indispensable to food fanatics and those seeking more of the background and context from which contemporary western culinary culture -- high cuisine as well as comfort food -- emerged.

The Only Book of its Kind

I had a very difficult childbirth (back labor, young inexperienced doctor AND nurse, long, LONG labor, botched epidural led to general anesthesia for my emergency c-section, etc.).
For months I looked and looked to find something that would address my lingering feelings of loss and trauma. This book is the only one that addresses post traumatic stress after an especially difficult childbirth.
I guess the biggest thing it did for me is showed me I wasn't alone, and I wasn't crazy!
I can't say it "cured" me, but definitely worth the read if you're struggling with your birth experience.

Excellent!

I thought this was a great book for those of us with negative feelings of our birth experiences. Some real truths are dealt with here and I felt better reading about situations and emotions like my own. The book helped me realize that what I was feeling and people's reactions to my feelings were not at all uncommon. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is trying to recover from a negative experience and feels that no one understands. I am so glad I found it!

Wonderful, sensitive, kind treatment of birth trauma

This book represents one-of-a-kind treatment of the emotional havoc that a traumatic birth can have on a mother, and in turn her partner and baby. It is particularly effective in utilizing the birth stories of three women (including the author herself), which come from a spectrum of birth-traumatic experiences: the unnecessary cesearean, the absolutely necessary cesearean, and the highly manipulated vaginal birth. Through the accounts of these three women, a pathway is shown for many to follow in coming to terms with their own birth trauma. Perhaps the most commendable aspect of Madsen's treatment of the subject is that she choses to acknowledge birth trauma and the possible depression that follows as something other than "just hormonal," and even makes a good case for birth trauma being a particular instance of post-traumatic stress syndrome.
Besides the much-appreciated acknowledgment (to this reader, at any rate) that birth trauma is not merely unjustified self-pity, Madsen provides very concrete ways of coming to terms with what has happened and pushing on with life. Each chapter has "journal topics" for women to think, write or talk about. She also includes an entire chapter, "Creative Tools for Recovery," which details several more pathways, including art, writing, storytelling, dreams, bodywork, among others.
Not only is this book a must-read for any woman who has had a less than ideal birth, it would be highly recommended to people who have contact with new moms, including partners (who may have their own birth stress as well), doctors, nurses, midwives, doulas, counselors, and so forth.
