Rowed Trip

I like the way they trade off writing their accounts of every other country they travel through. Both good writers and you can see the differences in their personalities. I have lived in Europe and I expedition kayak, so their accounts of the good and bad parts of the trip were meaningful. Reading it makes me want to get out there and do my own trips.

Cycle and rowed trip

Husband and wife decide to do a long self propelled trip together from Scotland to Syria, following water ways as much as possible. Sharing some of their inner thoughts about each other during the journey was amusing. Passing through many countries and encounters with the locals also reminded me of an adventurous version of a Bill Bryson book. They also faced many obstacles, but managed to carry on, and despite knowing that they eventually reach their goal, it created suspenseful reading.

I have put this book to one side after reading up to arriving at Dover.....just cannot get into it....seems that this book was written in haste without any real thought or polish....very monotone...it's a shame because I was really looking forward to this book's release only to be disappointed.
"The Unlikely Voyage of Jack de Crow" by A.J.Mackinnon is a far better read.

Paddles
The paddle transfers effort into kayak movement. Proper size and style increases the boat's responsiveness and kayaking fun. Just as there are many options of size, shape, and material to select from in boats, there are lots of choices in paddles. In general, a shorter paddle can more quickly perform maneuvering strokes, which are important for shorter boats in tight waterways. Might be the only songbook you'll ever need.

If you're someone like me who is interested in the songs of antiquity and want to get better acquainted with them, this book is an excellent starting place. And with over 100 songs, it might very well be the only songbook you'll ever need.

Included is an introduction that I found helpful, and the arrangements are easy and very approachable. It's also filled with drawings that really put you into the time period of these songs. Overall, the layout and look of the book is pretty classy. It'll look great propped up on your piano or laying on the coffee table of your music room. It's big, heavy, and lays open pretty well for the most part.

A lot of modern books come with a CD to hear the songs you're trying to learn. Obviously this one is pretty old so nothing like that is included. I've not heard most of these songs or how they're supposed to sound, but I have discovered that most of them are somewhere on YouTube, so many examples of various arrangements can be found there to help.

Each song has a little bio before it to give you some kind of idea where it came from and what it's all about. I also like how the sections are broken up between English, Scottish, Irish, and Welsh songs. This book is really a history lesson in the music of yesteryear. I highly recommend it.

Inclusion is More Than Nondiscrimination

This is a great text for those interested in the cause of children with disabilities. "Making a Place" is easy to read, with detailed descriptions of real children and their families. Throughout its pages, the author challenges us to look again at how to make our communities more accessible.
Of particular interest to me was the discussion of "inclusion as nondiscrimination" (pp.178-179). Treating children "the same" is not the core commitment of inclusion. Rather, it is providing each child with the opportunity to access and participate in the activities of his or her age group. Dale Fink's book provides practical ideas for moving forward in achieving this goal.
