In this book one of the founders of modern test theory concisely describes many of the most important issues facing psychologists today. Even two decades later, it is still quite applicable. The only negative thing I can think to say is that it is quite concise, using equations in preference to lengthy prose, and yet leaves out proofs. Also, multidimensional and polytomous models and not described.

Contains three articles which explore the topics of desire, discord and death in three separate myths. The articles contained in the book are: "The allure of Gilgamesh: The construction of desire in the Gilgamesh epic," "On the couch with Horus and Seth: A Freudian analysis," and "Desire in death's realm: Sex, power, and violence in Nergal and Ereshkigal."
In the first article the author looks at desire in the epic of Gilgamesh through the lens of Queer Theory. I am willing to lend credence to many aspects of his interpretation but honestly I don't see everything in that light. Even without looking at the epic using Queer Theory I see the homosexual elements for what they are and don't require a special theory to look at it.
In the second article we have a novel approach in looking at the myth of "the Contendings" between Horus and Seth which uses Freudian analysis as its underlying theory of interpretation. Now outright I have issues with Freud and his incessant seeing every single thing as a symbol of something. Sometimes a thing is just a thing. With that said I did enjoy this article, and its analysis does give much to think about when looking at the odd parts of the story.
The final article examines the myth of Nergal and Ereshkigal through the lens of a feminist analysis of power. A fascinating article but again I can see much of the same analysis while reading the myth without having to use a feminist model to interpret it. Enjoyable nonetheless, and gives some interesting thoughts about the myth.
This book is possibly worth re-examining in the future after some other reading so I may readjust my rating at a later date.

An appreciative account

With Too Late for the Festival, Paine presents another solid entry into the foreigner-in-a-foreign land genre. Both poignant and hilariously cringeworthy, Paine transfers to the Land of the Rising Sun from her complacent life in Silicon Valley and in the process learns the intricacies and nuances of a culture committed to tradition.

Paine's behavior in Japan is embarrassing--arriving late to work, blowing her nose in public--but it is almost necessary as she attempts to compress the gulf separating herself from a time-honored culture she wishes to appreciate to its utmost.
It is a thoughtful consideration of cultural divides and a well-earned sentimental love letter to her momentarily adopted home. It is about the freedom of giving in and delving into a society without judging it within the context of your own. I found myself simultaneously embarrassed for Paine while appreciating her commitment to Japanese culture.

"Too Late for the Festival" is an honest account of what happens when an American is transplanted in Japan. Though her stay overseas was trying, even embarrassing at times, she retells it all with a dose of good humor and as a light warning to those with Japan next on their destination list. A truly engaging read!

About the Author
Joshua Kinser is a writer and musician. Growing up by the beaches of Pensacola, Florida, Kinser would head up to the mountains of North Carolina every summer and cater to his passion for hiking and backpacking. Feeding into his love of travel and hunger for new experiences, those early past-times led him to make a profession of writing travel guides, magazine articles, and outdoor-adventure guidebooks.

With regular stints as a wildlife biology field technician for the U.S. Forest Service, Kinser also finds himself these days in back country in Florida, in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, in Montana's Glacier National Park, and in California's National Forest lands surrounding Yosemite National Park. Indulging his cultural side, Kinser also is a professional drummer performing in wedding bands, clubs, and in cruise ship orchestras. Aboard the latter, he has drummed his way along the perimeters of Australia, Japan, China, New Zealand, Borneo, and South Korea.

As an accomplished author, Kinser wrote Moon Handbook's 2011 guidebook FLORIDA GULF COAST, third Edition. In 2010 alone, he published more than 200 articles online for websites such as Trails.com, Ehow, and USA Today Travel. Completing his degree in Journalism from Pensacola State College in December 2010, he also has worked as a staff writer for Gannet with the PENSACOLA NEWS JOURNAL.

Contains everything you need to know

I have never reviewed a book for anyone, and I have bought hundreds. I bought this book because I live in the Charlotte area and have some down time from thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, but limited time to hike. I will have no more that 6-10 hours a week to do a walk/hike. This book is very complete. No one needs anything else to be ready to find the trail, and hike the trail. No confusion. Written in a clear, well thought through manner, which is a quick aid to someone who has been hiking for years, or someone who wants to see what walking in a nice place is all about. No one will regret owning this go-to guide. The confidence it gave you approaching and during your first hike you planned using this book will make the cost well worth it. The trails it talks about will always be there in my life time. Somebody will find this book on my shelf when I die. I am 72 years old and been hiking/running/walking this planet for a long time.

Very useful

This is a great book. I'd give it 5 stars if it weren't for a couple of problems. The GPS coordinates are usually very good and useful but I found one that was way off. The maps and the descriptions don't always match up well. Maps sometimes have intersections not addressed in the description and sometimes it isn't clear whether the description is for a clockwise or counterclockwise loop. These are relatively minor complaints and are easy to deal with.

Helps to plan your hiking excursions

I had the privilege of meeting Ms. Friend just after this book was released. She was speaking at a monthly meeting for one of the Florida trail groups. I had just finished hiking her book 50 Hikes in Central Florida and I was anxious for another volume that would help me to explore local hiking trails. I found just that in Five-Star Trails: Orlando.

The beauty of Sandra Friend's trail guides are that they offer a personalized view of trails. The descriptions provided are from a first-hand perspective and provide a good baseline for a hiker headed out to one of these trails. Each hike entry includes a "statistics" page which gives length of hike, location, facilities, etc. Then there is a brief overview paragraph, followed by a play-by-play of the trail. At the end of the entry Nearby Attractions and Directions are two must-have sections that help the hiker to plan their day.

Hikes are grouped geographically, but there is a second grouping that let's you view them by interest. Both are helpful depending on whether you want to plan your outing by location or by activity. The introduction contains great information for beginning hikers, and the index is well-organized. Regardless whether you are a beginner or expert hiker, this book has something to offer. Even if you subscribe to Sandra Friend's newsletter and website, this is a great self-contained resource that will introduce you to the hikes around Orlando, and one you can use to plan your time on local nature trails.

Great do-it-yourself book

The best all around garden pool and fountain book that I've read so far. I have a couple of other garden pool books including "The Rock and Garden Expert" by D. G. Hessayon, but none of the other books provide the depth of design ideas that Ortho includes in this book. Although the "Rock and Garden Expert" does have a better of selection of plants. Ortho's book also includes illustrations on exactly how to install the different types of ponds as well as information on filtration systems, edgeing, lighting, etc. The back of the book also contains lists and photos of various plants and fish that are suitable for the different types of water gardens. If you only want to buy one book on garden pools, this is the one.

Great first water garden book

I bought this book to help plan a water garded. It is easy to read, keeps your interest, answered my questions, and had good pictures.

I also bought "The Pond Doctor"(not as good for a first book, but good reference book), and "Pond Basics 3" (a pamphlet from Emperor Aquatics, quick read and short answers).

Great Book for Beginners

This book is an excelent starting place for those who have ever wanted to install a pond or stream in their yard. It gives complete instructions about planning, purchasing, and building outdoor water gardens. It even lists the varieties of fish and plants to put in your pond. It also has a section on winter care of your ponds. This was helpful to me because it gets very cold during the winters where I live, and I needed to know what to do to ensure the success of my pond. Overall, this is a great book!
