Excellent Book for Walks around Washington, DC

I'm a walker, and I love to get out and explore the areas around Washington, DC. (There are a lot more parks, forests and wild areas than you might imagine if you don't live here.) This little book has become one of my favorites when I don't have time for a longer hike. Many of these walks can be done in sneakers, but a few do demand real boots.

Most of the walks in the book are 5 miles or less, so you can do them in 2 - 3 hours, plus travel time. The hikes are easy to follow, and the information about each one is well-organized. The author tells you what you need to know in advance: length, whether it's a loop or out-and-back, trail surface, what kind of scenery to expect and lots more. Plus he's introduced me to a few places I didn't know before...and I've been walking in this area for many years.

The book is so small and lightweight it's easy to carry with you. It's only a quarter of an inch thick, but contains 18 walks. The diagrammatic maps are helpful and properly inserted in the book with North at the top. (Don't laugh; I've encountered too many books where North could be anywhere on the page.)

Easy to use, clear, and full of good ideas. If you want to walk in and near Washington, DC. The book calls these "hikes," and those in the regional parks are hikes, but many feel just like long city walks to me. And that's just fine. This is a great little book to get you out walking.

About the Author
Bob Whitesel is a speaker, professor and award-winning writer on the organic church, missional leadership and church growth; who has been called by a national magazine: the key spokesperson on change theory in the church today. He holds two doctorates (D.Min. and Ph.D.) from Fuller Theological Seminary where he was awarded the Donald McGavran Award for Outstanding Scholarship in Church Growth. He has written numerous hiking, camping, and paddling books covering much of the U.S. from Florida to Wisconsin to Colorado and articles for magazines and Web sites.

All veteran paddlers, Elizabeth F. Carter and John L. Pearce wrote Volume I: North Central Peninsula and Panhandle, and Lou Glaros and Doug Sphar wrote Volume II: Central and South Peninsula, that have been definitive guides to the waterways of Florida for almost twenty years.

Get this book, you won't be disappointed

I own this book and it does a great job covering the entire state's top paddling spots. The book breaks the state down into nine geographic sections and cover the rivers and spring-runs in the area with notes, a sketched map(drawn accurately from topo maps) and other info on the waterway being covered. This is the FIRST EDITION and there is a second edition supposedly coming out in April 2007, but I'm pretty sure both books contain the same info.

A Canoeing & Kayaking Guide to Florida

There are a lot of rivers in Florida and this book does a good job of letting you know where they are and it also includes a short review on each river. I have paddled many of the rivers in the book and I find their reviews are very accurate.

buy something else

Maybe if you live in Florida you can make sense of these maps. There are no cities on them. If you're not from Florida, like me, they make no sense at all. Also, the distances he lists are sometimes self-contradictory. One of the maps shows the Pacific ocean. Last time I checked Florida is not near the Pacific. If this were the only fault with this book, it would be one thing, but I think it is just symbolic of the general quality of this book. I have only paddled on one of these rivers, which he lists as good paddling, but it is actually choked with fallen trees - you have to portage about every fifty feet.

If you want to know where you can paddle near some city in Florida this book is useless. You can't figure out what listed rivers are near that city. Even if you can figure out where these rivers are, he doesn't give you enough information to know which one you want to paddle on.

About the Author
Lydia Cabrera (1899-1991) was a legendary Cuban ethnographer of Afro-Cuban culture and the author of many books, including "El Monte" and "Vocabulario Congo," Alberto Hernandez-Chiroldes is a professor and chair of the Spanish department at Davidson College. Lauren Yoder is James Sprunt Professor of French at Davidson College. Isabel Castellanos is one of the foremost scholars on Afro-Cuban culture.

The Manuel How to for the Newly Initiate en Santo

Iyawo or Yaguo depending on how you pronounce it, is the novice initiate of the Orisha Religion. An Iyawo is an individual, both male, and female who has gone through the Kariocha Ceremonies and has had the Santo crowned upon the head. During a year the Iyawo is to follow strict rules, wear white, and learn to respect and honor their ruling Orisha with pride and dignity.
As a young initiate and a future Babalorisha or Iyalorisha (Priest / Priestess) I highly recommend this book to all Iyawo initiates. The booklet is in Spanish, so it would help immensely if you knew the language. This is the Manuel the How To for the newly crowned initiate, and a must have.

A great book on the year of Iyawo

En esta obra de Cabrera, ella hay escrito en cual explica los taboos que el neofote endura durante su ano de iwayo. Translation: In this text, Cabrera has written a book that explains the taboos that the newly initiated into the religion of the lucumis must follow during their first year. Cabrera's book also gives explanations on shell divinaiton as well as some history on the religion. This is a great book!

It's a good collection of information concerning a new initiates expected behaviour and contains information collected from several interviews. Good for a general survey of practices in the Santeria religion.
