About the Author
A world famous cartoonist, called the "Poet Laureate" of the whitewater community, William Nealy became a cult figure in the world of outdoor sports with his combination of instruction and artful caricatures in his paddling and mountain biking manuals. Nealy died in 2001.

As an instructor, Nealy’s strength lay in his ability to convey in simple terms the often counter-intuitive techniques of adventure sports.

Nealy was arguably the best-known ambassador of his sport, entertaining and instructing hundreds of thousands of paddlers through his illustrated books. The success of the first edition of Kayak as an instruction manual hinged squarely on Nealy's ability to convey himself personally to the reader. It is all too obvious that each of the mishaps that befall the illustrated characters populating each of his books happened, in reality, to Nealy himself. That self-effacement, while hilarious, also embodied empathy for the reader and for the mishaps that were sure to befall him as he bounced his or her way down the steep learning curve of the sport. In short, each reader of Kayak, as well as Inline (an inline skating manual) and Mountain Bike, grew to trust Nealy as a teacher because he felt he knew William as a friend.

Hump Jumping – It’s hard to “get air” going off a big slanting drop. However, you can use irregularities on the face of the drop (humps, bumps) as mini ski ramps to launch from. When contemplating a hump jump ALWAYS inspect your launch hump carefully…an upstream-pointing face irregularity can pin you or literally rip the bottom out of your boat (and you)! By studying aeriation (or lack of aeriation) on or near the hump you can make a number of safety oriented decisions.

What a clever & creative writing style! William Nealy would have been a treasure to call your friend! His closest friends did us a huge favor bringing this resource to print. Thank you! Nealy's artful sketches and caricatures are spot on... simplifying what otherwise would be complicated concepts & situations to explain... Duh! "Now I get it"! Wm. Nealy's book, Kayak: The New Frontier is like a Bible for those wanting to learn how to more safely navigate moving water. KUDOS!

Great approach to the subject matter!

Excellent for both novice and advanced kayaker. For those who venture beyond lake or bayou kayaking, this is a nice choice for adults and children, given the illustrated approach to the subject matter. Highly recommended whether you are in a yak in Class 1 wiffles or some heavier foam and rollers going downhill in a river full of rocks. Would make a great gift for kayaking friends.

It is fun, informative with great illustrations. A must read for a new whitewater boater! The amount of time spent staring at a nasty hydraulic is directly proportional to the amount of time that you'll spend getting trashed in it. :D

About the Author
Author of the 2012 collection Cell Traffic: New and Selected Poems and Winner of the 2009 Minnesota Book Award for her poetry collection National Monuments, Heid E. Erdrich also co-edited Sister Nations: Native American Women on Community. Her first play, Curiosities, was produced by Pangea World Theater in 2010. She is Ojibwe, enrolled at Turtle Mountain. Heid grew up in Wahpeton, North Dakota and attended Dartmouth College and Johns Hopkins University. Heid has worked in education and in community for twenty years teaching writing, lecturing on Native American literature, on language recovery, and on visual art. She is a frequent visiting author and project scholar for colleges, universities, libraries and art and cultural centers. She has curated over a dozen visual art exhibits in recent years. Currently, Heid directs Wiigwaas Press, an Ojibwe language publisher, and she is at work on a cookbook from the indigenous foods movement.

The Pond

Baltimore's flowers go off like fireworks.
Azaleas buss in colors too hot for our eyes.
You take me to a pond with a cooling fountain,
a bronze child leaping across lilypads. I'm amazed
when you stamp your feet and the Koi rise to be fed.
We have come to release an overgrown fantail goldfish.
She slips from the plastic bag, glimmers above dull coins,
disappears into waters as filled with wishes as marriage.
I press a penny to my lips, toss it in the depths.

Catch and release, catch and release-we have loved
this way for years. That day at the pond repeats,
it seems. The splashing child never
ages, our reflections always waver. And you
keep stamping at the edge of the pond until hundreds of fish churn at its surface,
bubbling up with wishes at their lips,
all the best, all for you.

Poems that revisit and reshape the myths that guide our lives and our culture. This collection records, with memorable imagery and striking lines, the lives of some of the Native American people the author grew up with. It also comments on the political events of our time. And, interspersed throughout are some of the most sensitive and down-to-earth and intellectual love poems you'll ever find. Don't let this book be "the one that got away."

See Your Church Plant Another Church

Each chapter starts with what Stevenson calls a "Ripple Principle" and each of these are succinct and powerful. Perhaps in your ministry or ministry area, you would want to take each of these and see how they work out in your context. For example the ripple principle in chapter four "Models of Parenting" is "There are many ways to parent churches." Have you thought through this and come up with many ways instead of being limited to one way of parenting a new church. Learn from Stevenson and you will develop much more of a "ripple" mentality. On the France ministry area of TEAM, Dr. Vernon Mortenson talked with us about "planting churches in ever-increasing concentric circles. That is both a multiply mentality and a ripple mentality. Go for it!
The foreword is written by Ralph Moore of the Hope Chapel Movement who is quoted further on in this newsletter. Moore shows that this book is not ivory tower theory but explains that:

Groovy Paddling Satire Sequel

You must be a paddler (or at least paddled once) to appreciate William Nealy's zany little collection of humorous sketches and creative cartoons. This collection includes unsolicited advice on paddling, epic adventures, another parody of outdoor equipment advertisements (S&M River Supplies), the "S&M Campfire Songbook" featuring the lyrics to "my Boat" (set to the music of "my Guy") and a host of other funny little penned paddling sketches and comics which, most likely, came right out of Nealy's river sketchbook.
It's a groovy little book and another cool thing to pass around on camping/paddling trips to get some laughs by the campfire.

Great cartoon humor

A very humorous view of the incredible sport of whitewater paddling. I read this book from cover to cover and couldn't stop laughing. It is also somewhat informative and the cartoons and lyrics are very entertaining. This book makes a great gift for any whitewater enthusiast. Dancing on the Edge of an Endangered Planet
