Being Mom...or Dad...This book still fits!

Even though I'm a mom and not a dad, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Drury's, Being Dad. Although his stories and anecdotes are framed from the perspective of being a father, I feel as though any parent can glean some powerful wisdom from his book. As a new parent, I was glad to see Drury tackle a lot of issues I've already thought about that will inevitably pop up some day. His chapter "Dirty Glass" really resonated with me as I find myself warding off perfectionism constantly. Also, I really enjoyed the fact that Drury tackles the topic of money in his chapter "Dave's cassettes" which in some circles is largely ignored today. Lastly, the chapter "The Funeral Home" really made me think about how my own parents dealt with the topic of death and how I want to deal with things differently with my kids. I think Being Dad has a treasure trove of information within that is so applicable to parenthood as well as marital relationships, and even my job (I'm a teacher). Three cheers to Drury for creating an accessible manual to living life as a God-fearing parent who is constantly seeking wisdom in order to raise Godly children.

Intentional fatherhood

"Being Dad" is a well-written reminder of just how important intentional fatherhood is to the generation walking in our footsteps. Through personal stories that made me both laugh and cry, Drury shares from a wealth of stories of his own father's intentionality. This truly is a book that you can't (shouldn't) ever "finish" reading - but rather a book I will continue to reference as I continue to walk the journey of fatherhood.

Not only is this a great book for any dad with kids at home, it's excellent for us 'empty nesters' who might need a reminder you are always a "Dad". The easy to read and compelling style David Drury employs keeps you interested from cover to cover. We have ordered a copy for the dads in our lives so we can all grasp the legacy vision together. Great book!

Terrific for weight loss!

My wife is picking out new recipes from this book every day, and I have to say that this is a surprisingly consistent book when it comes to "light" fare. Most "healthy" cookbooks either contain only one or two winners, or have such delicious fare like sprouts and lima bean brownies. In this book, some recipes have been better than others, but all recipes so far have been good, and best of all, I've lost 30 lbs in the last 2 1/2 months! Granted, I've been working out as well, but I can honestly say this book has definitely had an impact on my weight loss!

Excellent cookbook, but as always, some hits and misses...

Excellent pictures of recipes which help me decide what looks appetizing at least, rather than going through the science on a recipe to guess how it's supposed to turn out.

The upside: everything was pictured, *easy* to prepare, and the ingredients have yet to send us on a hunt for something we couldn't find in your average American grocery store.

The downsides: Some of the recipes are very 'American', meaning they appeal to the folks that think ketchup is 'spicy'. I've had to "Bam" a few of these recipes to my liking. The other thing is that there's a lot of interpretation to what "1/2 cup of salsa" could do for a meal. IE: 1/2 cup of pace vs. 1/2 cup of homemade can completely make the meal different. It's no big thing, it just requires some vigilance to make sure it tastes as well as it looks in the picture.

The coffee pot-roast was awesome, but I do NOT suggest making a gravy out of the juices. Rather, it's a perfect match for barbecue sauce. The quesadillas are a 4-star favorite in the house, as well as the macaroni and cheese.

About the Author
