The perfect toddler project book!

This delightful book is an especially helpful tool for the beginning gardener. It will guide you and your children through all the basics of creating your very own garden. What a wonderful project for a toddler! Based on a gardening project started at the French-American School in Berkeley, California, this book will take you from planning and planting to harvesting and cooking delicious herbs and vegetables. The recipes are almost entirely vegetarian; including Herb Mayonnaise, Corn, Rice and Tomato Salad with Basil, and Snap Bean and Potato Soup with Pasta, just to name a few. Also includes a resource section for seed suppliers and more.

Some good basic Info but the plans are horrid

I am a novice builder and bought the book as it had the plans for a shed I wanted to build and also basic carpentry skill information. The plans were going along fairly well until I got to the roof, a hipped roof. The measurements were clearly not for the eight foot by twelve foot building. The first board I cut was about a foot and a half too long. I had half a building constructed with really no idea how to build the roof. I went ahead with it and I am now faced with a completed roof frame that will not allow the sheathing to be put on because the hips are at the wrong angle at the corners. There are also several areas in the book where they contradict themselves on material thickness or size. Poorly written and even more poorly edited. You should be ashamed of yourselves for putting this book out.

Frustrating Book Has Mistakes -

Extremely frustrating.
A. The material list for the Basic Garden Shed doesn't include all the material...eg Nails, roofing felt, and who knows what else. I haven't finished the shed.
B. The pictures have errors. The short walls have extra boards in the corners that don't show up in other views and do not make sense.
C. The dimensioning is given on some perspective views where they should have been given on top views to avoid confusion.

Otherwise, this book has a lot of good information. It seems to have been released without having been proofread.

Great book for building Gazebo's

This is the best book I've found for building a Gazebo. I built the basic Gazebo in 2 weekends. I did modify the design to include sliding windows, the modifications were easy based on the design. We use it as a 3 season Gazebo.

New Uncrowded & Undiscovered Trails

"I thought the Appalachian Trail was the only trail for long distance hiking. Boy was I wrong. This bookopened my eyes to all the long distance hikes I can go on, besides the overcrowed AT, including the Pinhoti Trail, my home state.
So get off the AT and travel not only the Pinhoti, but also such cool long distance trails as the Foothills Trail of North and South Carolina, where waterfalls and trout fishing enhace some bona fide mountain hiking. I'm looking forward to tackling the Floriada Trail this winter, especailly the part that traverses through the Bradwell Bay Wilderness.
There's over 600 miles of long trails detailed in this book, and I'm gonna try to tackle them all. "Wish me luck."

Being from East Tennessee, all I've ever heard about was the Appalachian Trail. The AT is getting overcrowded. I was glad to see Johnny Molloy's book out there (He used to live here in Knoxville). His book gives alternative long hiking trails from Louisiana to Florida to up in my neck of the woods. The best part of the book is how he makes it so easy to plan a long trail backpack. Each hike gives detailed information getting there, and what you will find along the trail once your hike has begun. I can plan how far to hike each day, since potential campsites are detailed, along with where to get water, etc.
This book makes heading into the unknown a lot easier, rather than sticking with the overdone, and overhiked Appalchian Trail."

Contains accurate details, but may not cover all trails in a given area

I bought this specifically for the information it provides related to the Black Creek Trail and the Shockaloe Trail. Other southeast trails are covered in the book, but these are the two I most cared about.

I can confirm that at least 70% of the details given for the black creek trail are still valid even though the book is dated in many ways. I have yet to confirm the Shockaloe details.

Basically, this book is still good because it gives accurate details. It isn't great because it doesn't cover several other trails in the southeast that aren't mentioned at all. If you want details on a trail that are covered in this book, it is worth buying. If you intend to buy it on the basis that it contains details on all trails in the southeast, that is not the case though.

Medication for the pain

Some of us see the hand of the Devine most clearly in our appreciation of the transcendent beauty of the universe, and in particular that of our home planet. Some of us are in great spiritual pain because what we see happening to the environment and the web of life.
"Blue Mountain" with its wide range of poetry, proverbs, excerpts,and brief essays celebrating the earth was easily the best collection of its kind recently read. It was healing medicine for environmental melancholia and despair. Even though it does nothing to change the daily headlines, the renewal of spirit was a spring tonic for the soul.
Reading it again can even ignite a smoldering ember of hope.

Poetical, Spiritual, Refreshing

Bachleda has put together an anthology that I would like (and once planned) to have done, but am glad I did not because she has done it so much better. These excerpts are for outdoor folk of any kind, for those who cherish the earth or want to do so more, for hikers and those who enjoy just a sunset or fresh breeze. She has cast a wide net and cites from many ages and cultures and genres of literature, 160 or so indexed authors, passages that are old and welcome friends (like Maclean's "Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it" and Muir's "Climb the mountains and get their good tidings") and many more citations that are new and unexpected gems, even touches of humor like Woody Allen's moose in spats or Marge Piercy shooing the hunters (caw, caw). As in all anthologies everyone will have some favorites that have been left out or will find some selections cited and wonder why. The passages are spiritual and responsible, but without any touch of theological tediousness or political stridency. Bachleda shows us just the beauty, spirit, poetry and wonder of holy earth. Her selections are arranged loosely according to the theme of the hero's journey from desire and need, to marveling and adoration, comprehension and joy, connection and unity, redemption and grace, recognition and compassion, to hope, resolve and beyond. One might read it in that order cover to cover -- which unless done a little at a time would be like eating a giant box of chocolates at a sitting -- but a system of marginal symbols for the elements of nature, the seasons of the year, and the religious sources of the quotations facilitates random access depending upon your location or mood. It is well worth its weight in your backpack or its space on your bookshelf.

Opening with a review of consultation and its purposes, this unusually practical volume describes in detail how to define consultant functions; make decisions about where to enter the system; build support among key school system staff who are in a position to facilitate initial entry; garner information on the school's lines of authority, communication networks, missions, values, goals, and traditions; determine how practical the project is to the school; and ascertain whether financial, personnel, and other resources are available so the project can work. Chapters also cover logistical planning, especially the day-to-day steps needed to facilitate consultation, including time management, utilization of existing school resources, sources of information, and practical ways to turn obstacles into assets. The book comes complete with prototype forms, questionnaires for examining consultant competency, and rating sheets for tracking the consultation process.

About the Author
Edward S. Marks, Ph.D., is a school psychologist for Trenton, NJ Board of Education, and a licensed psychologist practicing in suburban Philadelphia, dealing in school problems and career development. His work reflects over 27 years of special education experience, and focuses on improving consultation to teachers and schools, conducting inservice training and continuing education for teachers and Child Study staff, as well as evaluation, crisis intervention, and counseling of students. A past president of the Philadelphia Society of Clinical Psychologists, he was a founder and Vice-President of its Human Services Center, and served as secretary of the Pennsylvania Psychological Association.

A "Must-Read" for every married guy

This is an incredible guide for the lives of married guys or those "confirmed bachelors" who have been co-habitating with a member of the opposite sex and will continue to do so.

I picked this book up along with a stack of others when I was exiled to Marietta, GA for a number of months and was experiencing some domestic issues related to this move as well as some really stupid "guy stuff" I had done. I found it stood out from the crowd as the main self-help tool in my arsenal.

If you find yourself in a very touchy situation and need some guidelines and straight truth, as we guys often do, read this book once or twice and have a marker handy.

I've read dozens of self help books and this one stands far above the rest. It is one of my top 3 most influential books. It clearly explains the importance of certain concepts such as boundaries, feelings inside us and how they impact current relationships, and how we have certain behaviors that negatively impact our relationships - that we aren't even aware of where they come from. The book then goes on to showing HOW to implement the ideas, and they do work. I can tell you that in a short period of time, this book has provided tremendous insight into myself, feelings, and how I relate to my partner. You will be able to put the ideas to work immediately. The revelations I have from this book have helped me feel more whole, and with an ability to respectfully love my partner. The ideas in this book blew me away- definitely worth a read.

What a fantastic read. I have difficulty connecting with many self-help or relationship-help books, but this is one that hit the mark every time. The author gets a little corny now and then, but if you can look beyond her peace-flower prose and to the deeper meaning, the message is powerful.

The Obed- Emory watershed is full of great paddling opportunites for every skill level. This book enables paddlers to get the most from a visit to the Cumberland Plateau area. The guide is accurate, and manages to be entertaining to read at the same time. Organization is excellent, the guide lists trips in order from hardest to easiest.
