E. Mark Cummings, Ph.D., is Professor of Psychology at West Virginia University. Excellent overview of an important topic

I think that this book lays out the critical issues in understanding the consequences of marital conflict on the lives of children. In my opinion, the balance of theory -- to get you thinking -- and actual research findings -- so that you know the big picture of what is really going with children -- is great. I disagree heartily with the previous reviewer that this book is lightweight. Also the citations are NOT just gratuitous "I'm justifying what I just said." They are also there to suggest to an interested reader **further food for thought.** That is an important distinction.

lightweight review of recent research

This is a good introduction to the topic. It contains some interesting points. One is that even very young children are affected by marital discord. Another is that exposure to discord is likely to make a child more, not less, sensitive to it.
The book has its drawbacks. It's repetitive and heavy on fluffy citations, like "How couples handle differences is also important in marriages (Margolin, 1979; Markman & Kraft, 1989)." (p. 21). Do you really need someone else to back up an assertion that how couples handle differences is "important"?
Another example: "Spousal disengagement and withdrawal are associated with current marital distress [three citations follow]." If such statements of the vague and obvious were left out this book would be even slimmer than it is. These statements are the givens which made me want to read the book, to find out the why and how.

About the Author
Steve Henry grew up on a farm in the rolling hills of central Kansas, spending much of his youth working under the blue skies of the plains. After earning Bachelor's degrees in Marketing and Agricultural Economics at Kansas State University, he served a seven-year sentence in the offices of an insurance company. Missing the outdoor life, he escaped in 1985 to cycle across the continent twice, including one trek from Anchorage Alaska to Key West, Florida. He has also organized triathlons, led bicycle and backpack tours, written articles for outdoor publications and websites, and enjoyed many camping trips in between projects. When not wandering the woods and writing books about it, Steve admires the countryside from the driver's seat of a Peterbilt 379.

I am a big fan of Steve Henry. This is a great book and is a must have for anyone interested in hiking the show me state. Trails, maps, and directions are all accurate and easy to read. The author also includes detailed info about each hike that will further enhance your adventures. I also own Steves mountain biking and camping books and they are excellent as well.

I love this book. I got it after seeing it on [...]. Good detailed description of the hiking trails and highlights on the trail. I like the hiking maps, very simple but you get some idea of the shape of the trail. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a good hiking guide of Southeastern Missouri.

The author, herself a victim of multiple sclerosis (MS) for over 30 years, uses a compilation of E-mail chats to relate 23 women's experiences with MS. The use of various electronic media has provided these women, who sometimes suffer isolation as a result of their disability, "a way to `leave' [their] everyday surroundings and seek out a safe place where [they] can talk about [their] ups and downs with others who are going through the same experiences." The author states that very little medical information is given and that "all the experiences are shared in a conversational context, and are not intended to be medical advice." Although trite at times, this approach to a discussion of life with MS is more open and appealing and less frightening than Ellen MacFarlane's Legwork: An Inspiring Journey Through Chronic Illness (LJ 9/15/94). Twenty-three women with multiple sclerosis share their e-mail discussions; the result is a ready-made support group for others with the disease that offers plenty of practical tips for day-to-day coping. Nichols (a former reporter and freelance writer) has had MS for over 30 years; she introduces the other women in the group by age and circumstances (medical and otherwise): the range is wide enough so that readers will easily find experiences here that speak to their own conditions. Chapters are loosely organized around guiding themes, but among the big questions covered here are mobility, work, family issues, sex, pain, depression, bowel and bladder control, and spirituality. Medical information is reliable as far as it goes, but much more valuable are pointers on getting good medical care, coupled with advice on all the subjects that either won't come up or wont be adequately covered in a physician's office. Nichols and company are particularly helpful in dealing with the uncertainty surrounding diagnosis (MS is notoriously hard to pin down) and the resulting emotional roller coaster. At the time of Nichols's own diagnosis, her priest visited her in the hospital to tell her he was sorry she had MS, but ``it's your own fault for assuming that you know more than God about what's best for you''. Nichols and her friends have stood up under that kind of assault, as well as the trials MS has hurled their way. Welcome to my life!!!

Having lived with M.S. for over 20 years, I've read everything I could get my hands on. Nothing I read reached me like Women Living with Multiple Sclerosis. I loved it. Ms. Nichols and her "froup" members made me feel so welcome, so understood, so OK about myself. The book was so unabashedly frank, so helpful, and so very on target that I bought copies for two women friends with M.S., and gave my book to my mother and several other friends to read, just so they could see what it's like being ME, in layperson's terms, with no clinical mumbojumbo. This book is fabulous! Every woman with a diagnosis of M.S. - and all those who love her - should read this book. We really are all in this together, and there is so much for us to learn and share.

not for younger women

As a recently diagnosed 28-yr.old, this book depressed me more than informed or enlightened me. The women in the author's online circle are mostly 40-50 yrs. old, and while they have years of experiencing problems with MS, much of their info is outdated, as they were diagnosed, or not diagnosed with outdated methods, such as before the MRI came about, etc., whereas I got a diagnosis within a week or two after my first onset of an episode with the slew of testing at a wonderful clinic. Also, their experiences or episodes can be treated today, though they perhaps couldn't be treated 20 years ago. My problems are under control through the treatments available today, but reading these stories made it sound like I was in for an intolerable haul. I would not recommend this book to a younger (

Will never be on the bookshelf

I just recently discovered this book when a friend loaned it to me, and I can't wait to order my copy. This is a nice reference book that will stay on my coffee table from April to September. I do a lot of canoeing/fishing on the rivers in the summer, and this book has already led me to a lot of great floats that I didn't know about, even though I'm a native West Virginian. It's not going to tell you what to expect around every bend, but it does list the more notable areas of each river, including the dangers and problems you may encounter.
The first section of the book has basic information on canoeing and kayaking, terms and definitions, dealing with locals, phone numbers and other sources of information, and more (Much of this is written in a humorous way, reminding me somewhat of Pat McManus).
The book then lists each river basin, and after a short description of the area and a little history, it breaks it up into sections. The layout for each section is as follows:
1.TABLE - Contains capacities and ratings of the section including rapid classes, river gradient, water volume, scenery rating, time of trip, and river level.
2.MAPS - List of the names of the USGS maps and county maps that cover the section area.
3.DESCRIPTION - Describes the river, the scenery, and any other noteworthy aspects of the trip.
4.DIFFICULTIES - Notes any dangerous areas or other problems you may encounter along the way.
5.SHUTTLE - Suggests put-in and take-out spots or if there are any shuttle services provided.
6.GAUGE - Notes locations of river level gauges, phone numbers to call for river level information, or just basic references to gauge the level of the river for navigability. (I especially like this. Many times it goes something like, "If there are three stones showing on the so-and-so bridge, you should have no problems from point A to point B." This is nice since so many of our rivers have isolated sections that are nearly impossible to scout.)
If you live in West Virginia and want to canoe or kayak, or if you are planning a trip here for some river sports, this book is a great buy for the money.

The update of a classic

In the description of "A C+K Guide to WV, 5th ed.", it notes that 'many a copy of former editions spent significant amounts of time in the glove boxes of WV paddler's vehicles'. Mine certainly did. On my bookshelves, I have two copies of the 1st edition that did just that. In their heyday, they were planning documents, starting points, where the hell are we shuttle directions, warnings, inspirations and diaries. Their physical condition suffered for their service, but both have survived.

I moved to West Virginia in 1973 to attend WVU. Being an avid canoeist since my Boy Scout days, I was easily smitten by the added versatility of the kayak in running whitewater. So, through the WVU Outings Club, I hooked up with a couple of kayakers, or rather, whitewater fanatics. This was 'the book'.

The first edition, titled "Wildwater West Virginia" was written by Paul Davidson and Bob Burrell. Not only did they write the guide, but they did much of the research for the information it contained. No one was ever surprised to find one or both on the water, sometimes miles away from a road or access point. In winter, one would show up at our pool sessions at the WVU natatorium, where we duct taped split tennis balls to the ends our kayaks and choked on the chlorined water, happily eskimo rolling. Long story short, these guys lived what they wrote. Their descriptions were right on. The writing was unabashed, somewhat conspiratorial, and downright clever and funny at times. While the book never made any sales records, since back in the seventy's the whitewater kayaking world was a small one, it was a treasure to any who wished to explore the incredible variety of whitewater in West Virginia.

Now, over thirty years later, the guide is in its fifth edition. It is almost exactly twice as thick as the first edition, a testament to the growth of the sport and the constantly improving skill levels of its adherents. The authors; Paul Davidson, Ward Eister, Dirk Davidson all have long and impressive whitewater resumes, as does editor Charlie Walbridge. Bob Burrell is no longer listed as an author, although his presence is still there. Many of the opening descriptions, worth the price of the guide alone, were in some part his work. Many of those overviews in the 5th edition are edits of those found in the original edition. He is also quoted in several sections.

The book covers all of the major watersheds found in the state and some classics, like the Yough in PA and the Savage in MD. In addition, the focus has expanded. The 5th edition includes trip suitable for families in open boats on one hand and an extensive list of eye popper steep creeks on the other. It provides classes of rapids encountered, length of trip, gauge locations, a scenery rating along with a solitude rating. Shuttle directions are provided as is a somewhat generalized description of the run. In fairness, if the run descriptions were provided in more detail, some of the adventure of the trip would be lacking, no to mention the size of the book doubling again. Each description clearly identifies DIFFICULTIES in its own section. Always comforting to know ahead of time that that 30 foot Class 6 waterfall has a pathway around it on river left. As in the first edition, the writing is clear, concise and above all, entertaining.

I highly recommend the book for anyone with an interest in West Virginia Rivers. One need not necessarily be interested soley with the whitewater or canoeing aspect of the book, since the read is far more interesting than just a discussion of water running downhill over rocks. The authors have such a connection with place, so that a reader feels that s\he knows the history of the rivers as well. With the advent of the most destructive of mining techniques available, mountain top removal, the book may also prove its value as a 'history' of West Virginia's lovely mountain waters.

The book certainly has the basics, but it also leaves out information that almost anyone building a deck will encounter. If everything goes perfectly, this book will do, but it doesn't help you when things aren't ideal.

Kensho Furuya is the resident chief instructor of the Aikido Center of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Sword & Swordmanship Society Kenshinkai, and he currently holds the ranks of sixth dan in iaido and sixth dan from the Aikido World Headquarters. In 1989, he was ordained as a Zen priest under the Most Reverend Bishop Kenko Yamashita of the North American Headquarters of Soto Zen Buddhism.

My most read book

Each chapter/article is only a few pages but a lot is contained in each. There are many pictures and illustrations to help convey the current topic. Another feature I like are the quotes in the margin to highlight key aspects of the current topic.

I bought this book in 2002 and among my shelves of martial arts books, it is by far the one I come back to the most often. This book is on how to be the best martial artist and person you can be. The chapters are short but they will spur a lot of contemplation. This book is not meant to be skimmed over. It should be read in small increments and reflected upon. Each time you come back to the book and reread a chapter you will discover new meaning and application to your own training.

Learning Is Only the Second Step

The very first step to learning is to become a completely blank slate.

Hard or easy is just in your particular frame of mind. Many people with a lot less than you will accomplish much more than you in their lifetimes. Do not be defeated by a small mind or poor attitude.

We satisfy ourselves because we settle for less - even when we think we are getting more. Never be satisfied.

Make Mistakes Correctly

Kodo Ancient Ways

This is a superb book written with great insight and a must read as an aid to training, regardless of style, for the serious martial artist. I have purchased about thirty copies over the years, to give away to friends who are mostly non-martial artists. It is one of two books which I think can offer profound influence on one's life and art, the other is Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke. If you train seriously in martial arts, buy two copies of Kodo, because you will probably wear one out.

Kensho Furuya's book Kodo is not only an attempt to uncover some of the 'mysteries' of martial arts and make them tangible to the everyday student, but it is a commentary that reaches beyond the dojo.
In today's high paced, your way right away world, Furuya brings the reader into a dialogue that has been past over for a Tae Bo fix. He explains how today's students are not the students of ancient days, although it may seem obvious, this statement leads us down a slippery slope of self-discovery. Most students of all disciplines are wanting more for less. Wanting to become experts in 2-4 years and quitting if they do not achieve this status and blaming it on the instruction rather than on their own failure to endure.
As a martial arts teacher I cannot learn without good students, but as a student of the Martial Path, I could not have achieved my rank without a good teacher. A good student in any discipline is to take in the whole picture that his/her teacher presents, not to pick and choose as if we were in a cafeteria. Furuya makes this point repeatedly in many ways, because it is a point that is hard to drive through the hard-headed mentality of today's student.
Students today have an expectation and an outline of what they want to learn without ever setting foot into a class. Students tell the teacher what they want before asking what the teacher has to offer. Students are not students when these things occur.
If you are a student, listen to what Furuya has to say and take this as a sign that you can be a better student. If you are a teacher take solace that you are not the only teacher having this difficulty with your students.
The martial path is one of self-mastery and is a two way process. You cannot allow yourself to become passive as a student and expect your teacher to give you all the tools so that you may become masterful. You too must put in an equal amount of work if not more in order to embody the masterful teachings of the ancient ways.
