Just Like the Restaurant

For those of us lucky enough to have spent many a night "chowing down" on the out-of-this-world seafood and garlic rolls at this 600 seat suburban Chicago institution, what a THRILL it's been to own a cookbook with all the restaurant's best recipes! While other cookbooks from well-known restaurants omit favorites, due to secret/family recipes, etc... this book spills them all. From my all-time fave, sauteed scallops (in sherry-lemon sauce!!), to the irresistible garlic rolls, it's all here, along with great asides/behind-the-scenes talk and some nice photos. Though slightly simplified for home cooking, the recipes are absolutely comparable to "being there." After regular trips to Chinn's for years, I now live 2 states away, yet can still "savor the flavor" - and without the 2 hour wait. Highly recommended, especially for those who've been lucky enough to experience Bob Chinn's in person.

No One Believes!!

No one believes me when I say the best seafood restaurant I have ever been to was Bob Chinn's in Wheeling, IL (just outside of Chicago). I was in the Navy and traveled a great deal always savoring the foods. When I was stationed at NTC Geat Lakes, I was introduced to Bob Chinn's and my wife and I made at least a bi-weekly visit there. It wasn't uncommon to arrive 2 hours after opening and find yourself with a three hour wait.
Now we live in VA and remember the days of the greatest seafood ever. You have no idea how estatic I was to find this cookbook searching on the web for similar recipes I have tasted at Bob's.
Even if you have never eaten at the restaurant, this cookbook will make your freinds believe you are the greatest seafood cook in history.

I purchase alot of cook book and this is the ultimate seafood cook book. But it has more than that! I took it out from the library and ordered it at Amazon the next day! Recipes are simple with lotsa pictures!

Great book for paddling in New York state

Recently I picked up this book, adding it to several I own in regards to paddling in New York state. It has excellent guides to over 50 trips you can paddle by canoe or kayak. Even if you have other guide books on paddling in New York state, be sure to add this to your collection. Each trip has a very clear map and directions for put in and take out. I found some streams and rivers that are on my list for this coming year.

Each page continued to open my eyes on why I wanted this book. I laughed, I cried, and I wondered just how amazing God is and His love for me. Thank you Mark for sharing your love for God and the people this will touch in a special way - this is truly an inspiring book and something I have needed.

Fun, Informative, Vulnerable, Witty

If you're looking for another formula to make it easy to talk about Jesus to your friends, throw your net on the other side of the boat and go fishing with Mark O Wilson through the stories and insights in his latest book, Purple Fish: A Heart for Sharing Jesus; you'll catch a haul you'll need help to pull in! Using the fishing metaphor Wilson adeptly translates us from that which seems at least, fearful, and at worst, terrifyingly impossible, to that which is not only very possible, but enticing and invigorating! Purple Fish is hard to put down - each page invites the next and before you hardly realize it, you are very aware that "(i)f we're real, it just flows. If we're phony, then we have to be careful to put on a good Christian facade" (89). Wilson pulls you out of the facade of trying so hard to "get it right" and entices you to a genuineness that leads you to the conclusion, "I can do that!" If you're struggling to share your faith because your faith is not genuine, the integrity with which Wilson writes will draw you toward authentic relationship. If you're struggling to share your faith because you're introverted, or you've tried and it "didn't work," Purple Fish will motivate you to grab your pole and go on the fishing adventure of your lifetime!

Share Your Story, Not Your Judgement (the way evangelism SHOULD be)

Purple Fish by Mark O. Wilson is by far the best book about evangelism I have ever read. Instead of proposing formulas, scripts, or memorizing Bible verses to hurl at unsuspecting victims, Mark encourages the reader towards a more "real" method of meeting people where they are, sharing our personal stories of what God has done in our own lives, and allowing the Holy Spirit to do the heavy lifting.

I sincerely appreciated the not so subtle reminder that my job is not to be the judge, jury or chief prosecutor of my fellow man, but to be the witness of Christ that I have the honor of being. As I read this book from start to finish (I couldn't make myself stop reading), I felt God using many of the points and stories to remind me of things I can do right now to share more of His love with others.

Purple Fish is a great reminder that lost people are not projects or even objects to be caught, but friends, family and loved ones that are broken people in need of the same grace and healing we have already experienced. It is not our job to "evangelize", but our honor and privilege to share the wonderful love of Jesus Christ that has been so recklessly lavished upon us!

A Welcome Update, But Flawed

The "Hot Country Albums" book has been a neglected entry in the Whitburn line; the last edition was published in 1997.

While this is a welcome addition, the book contains a serious flaw: it does not provide "crossover" data for albums that charted on the primary chart, the Billboard 200, which ranks the top albums of all genres.

This was also an issue in Whitburn's book "Top Country Songs 1944-2005," which omitted crossover Hot 100 data, although it had been included in previous editions. After much criticism, this data has been reinstated for the newest edition of the book, to be released in late 2008.

There are enough improvements in this long-overdue edition to recommend it to music fans. However, Record Research's habit of withholding key information is disappointing.

I, too, say three stars

My one overriding issue with the book is that it has no song cross-reference at the end, akin to Joel's TOP POP ALBUM TRACKS 1955-1992 (book), of all the album tracks vs. artists. Each artist's entry has all the song listings referenced against each album, but there is no overall song listing appendix, as in the R&B Lp book, if you're trying to look up a specific song, such as Glen Campbell's "Galveston" easy listening hit, by other C&W artists/Lps. As with all my other Whitburn books (I have pretty much all of them, going back to my initial purchase of his first Lp softcover, TOP POP LPS 1945-1972, thoroughly used to death and barely holding its binding. It took him long enough after my griping about those 1945-55 album charts to upgrade his 1940-55 pop book; the TOP POP LPS 45-72 book had been the only way to look back at that stuff until 2002. Took him 30 **** years!), a GREAT useful tool. A suggestion for a new Whitburn book: all those previously uncompiled oddball album charts not in his regular Lp book(s)--the 1984-88 (?) CD album charts, Top Inspirational Albums, Top Gospel Albums, Top Classical Albums, Top Jazz Albums, generally charted albums/records never compiled to date, going back to the mid-'60s.

Dated plans & limited ideas

I bought this book hoping for plans and ideas for built-in shelves and storage units. The book does a fairly good job explaining the construction basics involved, but it is woefully bereft of ideas. The book is published in the early 1980's and the projects which are illustrated have not, for the most part, stood the test of time. If you are looking for building ideas and examples you can show a builder, this book is not a good starting point.

I agree with Steven A's review: the plans are dated and the ideas are limited - basically a bunch of cheesy-looking projects. The illustrations are also dated and not very well done; these days, books like this use photos to much better effect.

The clinical child interview is uniquely suited to assessing these internal events, collectively referred to as the child's subjective experience. Because at varying ages children possess different cognitive and linguistic skills and differ in psychosocial development, the child interviewer must be familiar with child development and skilled in interviewing strategies that accommodate these characteristics. An ideal resource for those who work with children, this volume offers a detailed description of developmentally sensitive interview approaches and strategies that permit children to competently share their rich subjective experience with the interviewer.

The book is divided into three sections. In the first section, the potential benefits of the child interview are discussed, and research on the reliability and validity of the child interview is summarized. The controversial issue of children's suggestibility is addressed, and ways for reducing it are extrapolated from research on children's eyewitness testimony.
The second section covers interviewing within the context of three theoretical orientations in child assessment: psychodynamic, psychometric, and behavioral. Illustrated with case examples, interview strategies consistent with each approach are reviewed and evaluated. The third section focuses on disorder-specific interviewing children presenting with either internalizing or externalizing disorders. These chapters demonstrate how information from the interview can be integrated with other assessment information to increase the completeness and treatment utility of the assessment. Throughout, case studies and extended interview excerpts illustrate how interview data contribute to diagnosis, case conceptualization, and treatment planning.

Providing the most up-to-date information on assessment techniques that are tied to empirical research in child development, this book is an invaluable reference for child clinical psychologists, school psychologists, pediatric psychologists, and child mental health professionals. It also serves as a text for graduate-level courses in child assessment and child therapy.

Highly Recommended!

I couldn't put this book down! I nearly finished it on the day it arrived. Tao's unique personality comes through on every page and makes for an interesting read. I highly recommend it to both whitewater paddlers and anyone interested in seeing what drives a world class athlete.

Fascinating Life/Fascinating Read

This book is a page turner for those interested not only in extreme sports,
but in knowing what it takes to reach one's goals and achieve success
while living life doing what you love. Tao Berman has what it
takes to reach those goals. First of all, a passionate love for whitewater kayaking,
and then the motivation, persistence, fortitude, attitude, and determination
to reach those goals. Making a good living in this sport is not easy.
It's not a money maker like football and baseball. But Tao hss done
exceedingly well in this area. The chapters on his marketing strategies,
and his financial management philosophy inspire and intrigue. I especially
enjoyed his sharing a bit about the personal side of himself. Highly recommended.

Surprising Finds Within a Short Distance of the City

You would think that a hike in New York City would take you from say Central Park to Battery Park along the sidewalks. To my surprise, the Brooks have found all of these hikes within a reasonable distance from the city. As a for instance, the Pelham Bay Park is 2,766 acres in size with 13 miles of shoreline. It's also reachable by public transport. (Take the #6 train followed by the Bx29 bus.) The hiking there is flat, shoreline and all that. Or there's Norvin Green where you'll need sturdy hiking shoes, and find multiple deep-water streams to cross in a 9.3 mile up and down trail. Other hikes include wildlife refuges, state forests, national recreation areas, swamps, mountains, rivers, waterfalls, ocean shores. You can get away from the concrete.

As a book, the layout makes it easy to find things. The overall maps lead you to the general area you may find interesting. The descriptions of each of the 60 hikes includes a description, a detailed map of each, elevation profile, and directions - usually by automobile and public transport. As the back cover says, If you live near NYC, get it.

A Fine Resouce For NY Area Hikers

Christopher Brooks surely did his homework in writing 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: New York City: with northern New Jersey, southwestern Connecticut, and western Long Island. The details on the many hikes in the Tri State area are very helpful. One can easily trace around the suggested trails that Brooks provides. Also Brooks adds a little history to many of the recommended trails.

He gives equal emphasis to New Jersey, Connecticut, Long Island, and the Hudson Region. Also a comprehensive index is provided so the reader can easily distinguish flat hikes from vigorous climbs to ones to bring the children on. Every base is covered as this book is a fantastic guide for anyone looking to explore new hiking trails in the New York area.

The "bible" of eastern NC flatwater

I've cussed the inaccuracies in this book more times than is printable. Benner claims to have canoed every single foot of every single river listed in the book, but it's pretty obvious by the listing of some very glaring errors that he hasn't.Stll, if you intend to canoe or kayak eastern NC flatwater rivers, you'll need this book. It is 95%-98% accurate, but those 2%-5% errors are doozies. Use it as I think it was intended, as a guide, not as gospel, and you'll be okay.My copy has long been my canoeing logbook, too. After every trip, I sit down with my canoeing partner of that trip and fill the book with notes of interesting things seen and make corrections of errors listed in the book, writing in the book itself. That way, when I do another trip with another bowman, I don't have to depend on memory to highlight important things to come about the given flatwater NC river.

About the Author
Elizabeth Hodgson is a Wiradjuri woman who lives in Wollongong on the New South Wales south coast. She was born in Wellington, New South Wales, but spent her childhood in a home for fair-skinned Aboriginal children in Sydney. She writes from the perspective of a fair-skinned Aboriginal woman with a dark-skinned father about the racism which has permeated her life. Elizabeth sits on the panel of the NSW Ministry for the Arts Advisory Council, the Indigenous Arts Reference Group and is chair of the South Coast Writers' Centre, and facilitates, mentors and writes for the centre's Aboriginal Oral History Project

An Ok Guide. Needs improvement

This book is fairly well put together and written decently. We live in Sacramento and we even met the author at a recent REI event. However, we've been on about 12 of the hikes in the book and almost all of them have been problematic to find. I believe the author may be more of a GPS guy than we are so we find his instructions to be vague and sometime confusing. Ultimately we find the hike. Additionally, his rating levels for rating the hike difficulty are off. An easy hike (which I would assume I could take my grandmother on) is really not so easy and has some hills. Good thing granny didn't come. Make sure you pay close attention to his levels and realize that even an easy hike can be quite challenging if you're not in shape or older. Lastly, the author make some notations to dog friendly hikes. So far of the 12 hikes we've been on, only 2 allowed dogs and the author is not really clear on the subject. Sometimes he states it out right "no dogs allowed" and other times he doesn't mention it or states they are allowed. We learned from one long drive with the doggie that getting to a hike that does not allow dogs, and not being fairly warned in the book, is no fun for us or the doggie.

I will say that this book has gotten us to explore more of the area than we ever would have and for that we're grateful. However, there is another Sacramento area hiking book and after looking at it in the bookstore, I wish I had bought it instead. I think perhaps the author was rushed to publish and didn't get a chance to finish the important details that matter to a hiker like me.

More things wrong than right

I've only done 2 hikes out of this book but the directions and descriptions were all waaay off. Elevations were wrong, directions to the trailhead were off, difficulty rating was meaningless and the total distances were off by over 20%. One of the trails looked as if it had been abandoned years before (and was actually somewhat dangerous) but there were two others in the same area that weren't even mentioned. The publishing date of 2008 led me to believe that the book was up to date...it isn't. Overall a tremendous disappointment. This book won't be coming with us anymore.

What a Disaster!

If you are looking for a fun and enjoyable afternoon hike..... then choose a different book. I have tried using this book on three different hikes and today was the final straw.

While the author includes pleasant imagery in his writing, it is little to no help when you are trying to navigate a trail. For example, while attempting to navigate our hike this afternoon, the flowery description the the moss covered boulders were useless. I would have much preferred that he would have described the the trails locations in relation to the 6 other trails that connected to ours. It would have been much more helpful if he had said "Go left at the Maine Line Trail" than saying "continue until you see the towering Eucalyptus" or "until you hear the babbling of a brook". The Maine Line Trail was neither mentioned in the text, nor depicted on the map. Long story short, my friends and I ended up getting lost for several hours in the California wilderness.

During our 5 hour race against the setting sun, I realized the Jordan Summers is my nemesis. Only my disdain for littering stopped me from hurling this book into the canyons below.
