These behaviors are not substance use type but rather compulsive or repetitive type behaviors. I knew academically the similarities involved here but had me never considered the many implications. This was an important book for me to read.

About the Author
Alexander Huber, born 1968 in Trostberg, is one of the most successful German mountaineers. The most important milestones in his career include extreme climbing tours in big caves, such as the ascent of the westface of the 7000-meter-high Latok II in the Karakorum, and alpine climbing in the Alps, such as the Route Bellavista (11-) at the Westliche Zinne. But many of his big successes Alexander celebrated in the Yosemite Valley. In 1995, he was the first climber after Lynn Hill to accomplish a redpoint ascent of El Capitan. In 1998, 2000, and 2001 he completed four more free ascents there: El Nino, Free Rider, Golden Gate, and El Corazon.

Heinz Zak, born 1958 in Woergl, is one of the most famous free climbers of Austria and one of the internationally most admired mountain and climbing photographers. Since 1979, he has traveled to Yosemite Valley again and again to climb and take photographs. He climbed highly difficult rents such as Phoenix. Together with Peter Jaschnek, he accomplished a free ascent of the Free Rider in 1998. And in 1999 he was the first non-American climber to ascend the classics--the Nose and the northwest wall of the Half Dome--in one day. As a photographer, Heinz Zak has accompanied leading climbers such as Wolfgang Guellich, Lynn Hill, Alexander Huber, and Dean Potter.

Stunning Photos-Great History

Alex Huber and Heinz Zak have produced an astonishingly beautiful history of Yosemite Climbing. This is a wonderful advance on George Meyers classic book, Yosemite Climber. Meyers put Yosemite Valley climbing before the world and drew the world's climbers to its walls. Huber and Zak, writing from a generation later reveal the advances that have occured from the combined attetion of internationals and locals alike. Clearly, there is no place in the climbing world like Yosemite Valley and this book clearly shows how and why this is so. Well written, clear, with no translation problems, the text provides a wonderful history of valley climbing. Contributions by other important climbers across Yosemite's history insure the narrative is balanced, accurate, and interesting. The photographs are unprecedented and inspiring. A delightful book that I have picked up time and again and recomend without reservation.

World Class Climbers, World Class Photographer

Yosemite is probably the most visited of the major national parks. The park has two parts, the valley floor and the fifty or so mile road through the high country.

Most people (I've read 95%) never leave the valley. The valley is indeed beautiful - wild animals, water falls, and more. But the high country is really special.

Half dome for instance is a giant smooth rounded pebble that from one side looks like something that you'd find in a creek bed, except that it's giant size. But then it's cut in two, with the cut away half simply gone. The result is one of the most spectacular mountains in the world.

Here in this book, is Yosemite. It's pictured from a rock climbers standpoint. And from that standpoint it shows places that I don't want to even think about going. But the views you get. You simply can't imagine. The photographer is a world class climber in his own right. Then he combines this with a camera that he obviously knows how to use.

There are a lot of things here (nearly every picture in fact) that I'm not going to see in real life. I'm glad that this book exists.

Taking a Break in San Diego

San Diego should, perhaps, be located further north in California. It has the heavy development found among the other southern California metropolitan areas but it also offers an ambiance that is in some ways more typical of the central California coast. Outdoor recreation is highly valued in San Diego. More preserves are being set aside on a regular basis and the county boasts some of the finest year round hiking in the state. If you would like to escape from the urban congestion and bustle of the greater San Diego region for an afternoon and explore a few of these preserves, then veteran outdoor author Sheri McGregor has the book for you. Part of the new "Easy Hikes" series from Menasha Ridge Press, this guide to the wilder part of San Diego will have you out of the car and on relatively easy and very scenic trails in short order.

As with other "easy" hiking guides, this book is not for those seeking all day strenuous excursions. Some of the routes described here are only 1/2 mile in length; short enough for anyone to do. The longest route is a 6.7 mile trek, at sea level, through one of southern California's few remaining undeveloped coastal wetlands, the San Elijo lagoon. With minimal elevation gain and cool coastal temperatures, even those who find this length daunting will be able to appreciate the walk. But San Diego offers more than just a beautiful coastline. McGregor also includes several mountain trips, including one of my favorite trails in the Laguna Mountains and an even dozen walks among the inland mesa and canyon regions found throughout the county betweeen the mountains and seaside. In all, some 22 walks are offered to beginning hikers and those who want to experience nature without extensive effort (or long drives.)

I've been exploring San Diego county for the better part of two decades. It is one of my favorite off season hiking areas in the state. I've personally walked about half of the hikes in this guide and am looking forward to exploring some of the other trails found in this volume. With decent sketch maps, a nice regional map on the inside cover, and detailed route descriptions, this is a book San Diego hikers can revisit on a regular basis. Those seeking longer and more challenging routes will find it relatively easy to combine several of these hikes. Or they can just get some of McGregor's other books. But this title is a winner for those who enjoy year round day hiking. It is simply hard to beat what San Diego county has to offer.

AfrikaKorps Uniforms and Equipment

This In Action book gives a very short, concise, accurate summary of the desert warfare fought by the Germans, Italians and British. I thought the emphasis was going to be on the uniforms and personal gear of Rommel's troops, but the photos are about largely about the equipment they used, almost all with soldiers in the photo. That's why I gave it four stars. Good for what it is, misleading cover.

Still, it does give you a good flavor on what the conditions were and how the equipment was used. The B&W photos here are very crisp, clear and many I've not seen elsewhere. The two pages of color drawings are of the uniforms only.

If you're looking for a book just about German uniforms, this is not it. But the photos really have a lot of detail of interest to armor buffs and especially good for anyone building a diorama. I enjoyed this book, worth getting if you're just getting into the history of the Afrikakorps, or perhaps find it on discount.

PRETTY GOOD BOOK

When I first viewed the drawing on the cover of this book, I thought most of the photos inside would be of individual Afrika Korps soldiers and their uniforms, weapons, and individual equipment. That's the reason I ordered it. But after receiving the book, I was a bit disappointed to find that almost all the photos were of vehicles and artillery pieces, albeit with some attending troops included in most of them. There were very few closeup photos of individual soldiers, although there is an excellent section of detailed color drawings that highlight troops and their uniform components. Still, the photographs of vehicles and artillery pieces that make up most of the book are impressive and informative. Readers who are mainly interested in Afrika Korps tanks, artillery pieces, scout cars, halftracks, motorcycles, and other vehicles will not be disappointed.

Excellent book of the equipment and weapons used in the war fought in North Africa. This book is pack from front to back with photos. Photos include not only German equipment, but Italian and captured british as well. You will love the action shots. Gives you good insight on how the war was fought and the equipment used.

Spotter's Guide to Bottled BBQ Sauces

I sort of wished that I had discovered this book a few years ago.

Being a meat lover, I have explored various bottled BBQ sauces for quite a while. You can get a bewildering array of them from supermarkets, summer fesivals, webtailers, etc. I found only a couple of them that passed muster (Chris & Pitts; Everett & Jones). I also neglected to keep a diary of what I sampled, and what I thought of them.

This book has already done most of the groundwork for you. It is sort of like a field guide that you take with you to the store or web site when you want to buy some BBQ sauce. It has reviews, descriptions, and pictures of at least 200 different ones. Although I have violent disagreements about some of the opinions, for the most part the book is an extremely valuable and useful resource.

It categorizes sauces into 3 types: sweet, tangy, and fiery. There are some recipes at the end, but I would not take these very seriously. It serves as a good starting point for those who would like to explore the wonderful world of bottled BBQ sauces. For example, I discoverd Gates from this book, and it explains why I hate KC Masterpiece and Bull's Eye, but like Kraft. It is also a good resource to help you avoid those BBQ sauces that taste like pancake syrup with a little ketchup and tabasco sauce.

Also note that there a many boutique brands in this industry. Many in this book are no longer available, and many have sprung to life since this book was published in 1999.

It's easy to get intimidated or downright confused when looking at all the barbecue sauce choices available today.
Remus does barbecue sauce aficiandos a huge favor with his "Great Barbecue Sauce" book. The originator of the American Royal International Barbecue Sauce competition, held each october in KCMO, Remus KNOWS HIS SAUCES.
His experienced tastebuds are able to discern the good, bad, ugly of over 300 commercially bottled barbeuce sauces.
I've known Remus for years. If anyone knows about commercially produced barbecue sauces, he does. This is a great volume, packed with superb information.

About the Author
A native of Kentucky, Bob Sehlinger has led canoeing trips throughout eastern North America and is the former president of the Eastern Professional River Outfitters Association. Founder and publisher of Menasha Ridge Press, Sehlinger lives in Birmingham, Alabama, where he enjoys mountain biking and playing the drums.

Johnny Molloy is an outdoor writer based in Johnson City, Tennessee. He has averaged over 100 nights in the wild per year since the early 1980's, backpacking and canoe camping throughout the country. If you live in Kentucky and do any kayaking or canoeing, you need this book. If there is a more comprehensive guide to the waterways of Kentucky, I'd like to see it.
