A little known classic - should be required reading

The ten or so others out there who have read this monster are probably experiencing a facial tic at my suggestion that it be required reading for all who design software. Its not a quick read, but its definately a page turner. I couldn't put it down.
I'm serious.
For me, a guy with a solid background in networking and systems architecture but without the classical human factors education required for intelligent product design this one document did a far better job of firmly rooting me in the basics than anything else.
Mad props to Norman and Neilsen for pointing me in this direction in the first place. But with this book I finally felt "full."
There were a solid list of findings I'd never heard of until I'd opened this book. Not only did this book introduce me to these sorts of things, it also illustrated them to me. I walked away understanding.
Like all of my other faves, this book is opened often. I've bought many copies for friends (with friends like me...) and I reference it often.
Its notable that the most leading edge work today related to this topic is being driven by the same guys who wrote this book so long ago. Its among my top five most suggested books for those I know who want to take their design to the next level.

A too-little-known classic

Designing human-computer interfaces is still an art, learned best by creating many interfaces and carefully observing how real users interact with them. However, there are many tools from cognitive psychology that, if understood and applied, can yeild at least two benefits. First, by learning what is known about how humans operate, you can avoid many pitfalls in design. Second, you can make quantitative design decisions.
This book, though nearly 20 years old, contains much essential material that is unknown to many practitioners in the field! If you are designing interfaces, on the Web, for PCs, or for information appliances, you should read and understand the basic material in this book, which can never go out of date as long as humans use keyboards and mice with their hands and scan the screen with their eyes.
My own recent book, The Humane Interface, is -- in many aspects -- just following in the footsteps of this pathbreaking, pioneering, and important work.

The editors have divided the book into four sections. Section I provides a historical review and broad theoretical framework for considering brain-behavior relations from a developmental perspective. The role of electrophysiology (EEG) in developmental research is also examined. Chapters in Section II focus on developmental changes in the brain, as indexed by changes in synaptic connections, glucose metabolism, and EEG power and coherence. Using changes in neural activity as indicators of important developmental transitions, a biological perspective on human psychological development is offered.

Section III addresses concepts of developing brain behavior relations. Neural correlates of developmental processes pertaining to memory, emotional expression and emotion regulation, spatial representation, and language are discussed.

Finally, Section IV examines brain activity as a predictor of individual differences in behavior. Authors explore the use of electrophysiological measures in early infancy to explain individual differences in temperament, affective style, language, and attentional abilities.

While accessible to those with little background in the neurosciences, this book adequately portrays the complexity and depth of brain-behavior relations in development. An important resource for investigators in the fields of developmental psychology, neuropsychology, behavioral neuroscience, clinical psychology, and education, it also serves as a textbook for graduate students, especially advanced students of human psychological development.

About the Author
Geraldine Dawson, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology at the University of Washington in Seattle, is editor of Autism: Nature, Diagnosis, and Treatment. Internationally recognized for her scientific research on autism and developmental psychopathology, particularly the effects of early experience on development, she earned her doctorate in developmental and child clinical psychology at the University of Washington, and received postdoctoral training at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute.

Kurt W. Fischer, Ph.D., is Professor of Education in the Department of Human Development and Psychology at Harvard University, where he is leading an initiative to focus on diversity in development and its implications for education. During 1992-1993, he was a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford, where he organized a group on Dynamic Modeling of Growth and Development.

Excellent stuff

This book is just packed full of pictures. The book includes a section on strength excercises, accuracy and power excercises, application, a complete set, and more. I found this book to be very informative, all the photos are excellent quality and leave nothing to guess.......GOOD STUFF!

Excellent Reference Book

This is a great book, and is well written. It has lots of details - leaves little to guessing - and shows some awesome techniques. The book also has strength training drills for wrists and upper body as well as drills to increase accuracy. The book includes a traditional form and the breakdown for the individual techniques in it. Also, at the end of the book, there is a lenghty section covering sparring drills between staff, spear, stick, sword, chain whip, and sword/shield. Excellent reference book, well worth the investment. I also recommend the accompanying DVD; you may have to look around to find it, but it helps the form make sense.

Raya Schapiro and Helga Weinberg found the letters among their mother's effects after her death in 1990. The 77 letters reprinted here span a period of two years, during which the Nazis drew an evertightening noose of destruction around the Jews of Prague: each letter is followed by notes of explanation and amplification, as well as notes on Nazi laws and official restrictions and the progress of the war. The early letters deal with the difficulties of getting the two small girls out to join their parents in America. After that is accomplished, the grandmother and uncle concentrate on their own prospects for immigration, and they struggle to maintain a normal life while hope slips steadily away. Each letter has a censor's stamp on it; each envelope bears the stillfrightening emblem of the Third Reich. The letters dramatically convey the tension, growing daily, of existence under the Nazis, and their tone becomes increasingly desperate as every avenue of escape reaches a dead end. Reading Letters from Prague is a moving experience, because it makes tangible a time in history so cruel as to be almost surreal. A rich legacy of bygone European Jewish life is maintained in this book, and Schapiro and Weinberg-a psychiatrist and retired teacher respectively-now grandparents themselves, can point to an invaluable record of human suffering and show the world that their voices, and those of their ancestors, cannot be silenced.

In May 1939, at the ages of five and seven, the authors, who are sisters, were left with their grandmother and uncle in Nazi-occupied Prague while their parents and baby brother, having been promised that the two little girls would be issued exit visas within a few days, fled to the United States. As it turned out, the girls escaped only after months of bureaucratic wrangling, while the grandmother and uncle never obtained permission to leave and were deported to the gas chambers at Treblinka and Auschwitz two years later. Collected here is the moving correspondence between the adults in Prague and the girls' parents in the U.S.--77 letters that tell of their efforts to maintain a semblance of normal life while the Nazis enacted ever more restrictive anti-Jewish laws. Schapiro, a physician in Chicago, and Weinberg, a literature teacher, include explanatory notes that amplify the text of each letter and chronicle the horrifying progress of Nazi control in Prague.
